Last night I went and implemented font variation support in mplcairo, using all the builtin capabilities of Cairo and FreeType:

@ASleepyWanderer Firebrick is such a good autumn colour, and chocolate is a good colour too but it looks nothing like chocolate.
The other thing that always confuses me about the named colours is how darkgrey is lighter than grey.
