@5Solas Preaching and teaching in many, if not most, evangelical contexts requires zero authority so it’s sort of hard to say women can’t do it.

@TheDonStein I would love it if a politician at ANY level could be found who was clearly and consistently a witness to Christ and the Augsburg. As it stands, politicians and journalists both seem to be careers that self-select for charlatans.

How much better off the church would be if we stopped inviting politicians and journalists and activists to speak at our gatherings, and invited doctors and teachers and firefighters instead.
Blake Callens@blakecallens

Every major discussion within American Christianity for some time has been centered on social and political activism. Even debates on eschatology and Trinitarian orthodoxy are centered around at least one side’s sociopolitical predilections.

@shebringsjoy Similar boat. My wife and I drive 50 minutes to our church every Sunday. We love it. Wanted to move closer but with interest rates rising we just can’t afford anything other than where we’re at.

@PastorDeberny He is not right, because his generalization is hand waving away the very real grievance that young people have today who are frugal, save, invest, and carry no debt and are still financially further behind the equivalent place older generations were at.

@DrunkRepub Most people didn’t die before they were 30. Infant mortality was high. It was that most people died as babies or as young children. Typically if you made it to around 20 you’d most likely be healthy for the rest of your life.

One reason so many dudes are mildly obsessed with ancient times is because so many of their modern-day heroes turned out to be woke douchebags. I mean this guy played Han Solo and Indiana Jones but in reality is more like Elizabeth Warren. If you value morality, truth, and decency the modern world, and its spokespeople, have very little to offer. So you look backward. Sure most people died before they were 30, but they knew they were owed nothing from anyone and they could damn sure tell you what a woman was.

I do not see anyone grappling with the housing market that isn’t just recycling emotional talking points. Affordability is historically bad right now. That is an undeniable fact. If that fact makes you emotional, that is more about you than the reality of the situation.

A historical and true salt mine fact: the cult-classic horror film Event Horizon’s directors cut is considered lost media despite a full version of it having been found in a Transylvanian salt mine, which, unfortunately, was entirely unreadable. Salt mines, man.
Megan | @megievalist@megievalist

Chaucer was believed to be a rapist based off of one legal document, and feminist scholars used this info in their critical analyses of his works. Just a few years ago, a NEW (medieval) legal document, that was found in a salt mine (???), cleared his name.

The “Rededicate 250” thing seems among the more naked abuses of Christianity for political gain in recent memory. It combines the superstitious Roman practice of consecrating whole nations with the Big Eva hyperdulia to the state. It’s red, white, blue and grotesque.

@shebringsjoy Ahhhh I see. Any cost to a parishioner is clearly egregious, I was unaware that there were so many instances of this being the standard- I’d only seen cathedrals. Thank you for the correction. I’ll leave this up should anyone else see it and also benefit from it.

They’re charging members. Many of them have extremely detailed descriptions of what baptism in their churches looks like, online. They specifically delineate that Those $1000+ prices are for cathedral baptisms of non-members of that specific congregation. They still require that everyone involved is Orthodox. It’s like if I belong to a small catholic parish church but I want the aesthetic of St Patrick’s cathedral for my child’s baptism. (Except St. Patrick’s doesn’t charge for sacraments. They just say “no, go to your home parish”, unless there’s a special circumstance- like you were married in the church or you have a family history there. And even then they don’t charge.) This is simony. We should be outraged.

@shebringsjoy I’m not entirely sure I’m getting at what you’re responding to. I agree with the sentiment that if the family aren’t members, why would the church be offering to baptize for a fee at all- that itself seems like Simony, to do something sacred for people who don’t mean it.

It’s absolutely not stupid. It’s actually more convicting. If a family aren’t members, why is the church baptizing their child? If the child isn’t raised in faith they become a target. Also - I saw your other post on this- the fees aren’t all for non members. Only the big ones. The $200-$500 fees aren’t all for for members. And they’re not for candles and such, those are brought by the godparents.

@InspiringPhilos @MasterMaliq Uh-oh guys too many people guessed IP is Protestant. Time to counter-signal with statements that are entirely non-controversial to high-church Protestants and only controversial to post-Catholic evangelicals. I’m not saying I disapprove. I’m saying… I can smell Anglicans.

Christians who believe Jesus is God should logically have no problem hearing Mary called the “Mother of God” or “Mother of the Church.” If Jesus is fully God and Mary gave birth to Jesus, then what exactly are you arguing against? Or have some Christians now become more Christian than the Pope himself?
Pope Leo XIV@Pontifex

Mary is the Mother of the whole Church. Everyone can turn to her with filial confidence, certain of being heard, protected, and loved. #GeneralAudience

Maybe I’m overlaying too many of my own assumptions but the Orthos are, from my experience, drowning in apathetic “cultural” practitioners. It seems only fair to force them into some frame of reference that what they’re engaging in is, in fact, a big deal.

Am I allowed to say I think it’s kinda understandable for churches to charge money for baptism? I dunno. I feel like The Discourse on this a touch overblown. Most of the instances I’ve seen where costs are exorbitant are for non-members.
