@RyanMaue The one I don't like is when people say 'this observation is 11 SDs from the mean!' when it makes the assumption that its gaussian.

Fun with statistics: every record high temperature ever observed is virtually impossible with or without climate change yet it happened regardless.

@ameliaUrquhart_ I'd argue that polar lows are basically very thin tropical cyclones anyway. But yes this is a warm cored system that is much more similar to a mini TC than an extratropical cyclone.

(2/2) While far from a hurricane, the PV/theta-E cross sections are more consistent with a compact and weak warm-core low than cold-core. There is also a region of relatively warm 850 mb temps within the low. This might be best classified as a polar low. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_low

While I came in here to say "no it's not tropical that's ridiculous," he might have a point. Cross sections show that the isentropes near the core bend downward a bit, much more like a hurricane than an extratropical cyclone. (1/2)

That's too much convection for just a ''non tropical low'' in Alaska right now. Just as the medicane yesterday morning, that's a fully tropical system, with rain bands, eye and eyewall. It's about to landfall somewhere in inhabited areas.

Observational studies often find that being slightly overweight (BMI 25–28) is associated with lower mortality. But when you control for reverse causation - where illness causes weight loss - and for the fact that lower-weight groups often include frail, malnourished, sedentary, or chronically ill people, that apparent benefit disappears. @BickuriB0x @db_fink Its a trivially true point. But most people in the west are close enough to the health optimun, and its not hard to get the essential amount. Fiber may not be essential but most people are eating far far below the optimun.

@BleakBritPol @db_fink I did, I've given two studies (Zhou et al 2022 and Dominguez et al 2019). But my point is that this relationship is ubiquitous, so even if you inevitably find fault with these two studies I could just post more. Its not controversial what I'm saying.

@BleakBritPol @db_fink Well for Fiber as I said you'd see a more linear relationship. Here is an example for Fiber (Dominguez et al). I'm sure even Fiber has a U shaped curve like carbs, fat and protein does but its so far to the right (relative to what the population consumes) compared to the others.

@BleakBritPol @db_fink This is one study, but this sort of thing is ubiquitous. You see a bunch of different protein types, but the relationship is similar. Very strong benefits initially, that level off and even become negative at high intakes.

@BleakBritPol @db_fink In health terms protein follows a threshold model, once you hit a certain level its rapidly reducing returns and even starts to go negative. Fiber is more like a linear relationship (outside the extreme) where you continue to accumulate benefits.

@QuantumOverlord @db_fink How is something where you need maybe 10-20g a day vs 90-120, more important?

@db_fink But equally being really muscular isn't optimal in terms of health. I agree I'm not optimal but I am athletic, low body fat but slim build because I have lots of slow twitch muscle fibers. I also specialize in shorter distances (under 10k) so I'm not as lean as marathoners.

@QuantumOverlord I wasn’t going to comment on size, but lots of the time people who do absolutely fuck all chirp in and end up being skinny fats who actually aren’t healthy at all

@db_fink Why? Body builders aren't exactly known for longevity. I'm an endurance runner as I've said before, but I do that for fun not because it has the best longevity outcomes. I'm reasonably good if it matters.

@AnEch0AStain @LeftieStats You can view it that way, but the contingent of voters that votes tactically for/against those blocs is low. How many voters have Reform as 1st choice and Green as 2nd choice (or vice versa) Conversely how many voters have Labour as 1st and Tory as 2nd (or vice versa).

@QuantumOverlord @LeftieStats The true error is viewing it as purely “Left & Right” ‘Outsider’ Bloc 🩵💚: 69.3% (+41%/+30.7% if 🤎 in bloc) Establishment Bloc❤️💙🧡: 29.1% (-33.4%)

@LeftieStats Its just an observation. But the principle applies in seats where the right/left split is closer to 50%. In those seats voter efficiency is even more important. And I'm not aligned to Reform, their inability to win this seat doesn't affect me.

@QuantumOverlord @LeftieStats Anyone who thinks that the Tories are a sensible choice is an unserious person. The Tories are now a party just for retired people who own their house outright and who think that Reform are a bit vulgar.

@rudebwoyben1 @LeftieStats Yeh, the one where I complain about the parties isn't as bad as the failed Gorton prediction. As I say, it was a better prediction because Reform amusingly started yelling at Yougov a day later.

@rudebwoyben1 @LeftieStats Is it? It was posted a day before Reform started yelling at polling companies. The other tweet was worse because it was a stupid mistake. Ref on 31% was reasonable but Grn+Lab on 51% makes no sense, would need the lib dems to get 15% or something. It was a basic arithmetic error

@rudebwoyben1 @LeftieStats My reform prediction was actually less wrong than Labour and Green. In prior tweets I actually said I expected Green would win, I was wrong to change my mind at the last minute. I'm only guilty of hubris in not wanting to go with the most popular prediction.
