Today, the Pakistani military controlled judge sentenced the democratically elected prime minister Imran Khan and his wife to 14 years in prison and barred him from holding public office for 10 years. Here is a useful reminder of why he is being persecuted.

@MBitcoiner @BitcoinMajlis Note that, as bitcoin gets broader adoption, we will see 1) centralised institutions controlling access points and supply and 2) interested based lending flourishing on top of it. Our concern starts with the fight against riba, not the adoption of btc.

Thought just came to me, but I'm thinking of maybe using this quote as the very first slide in our slide deck that we use to orange pill Muslims. It's gets the audience interested and intrigued, and it already gets at the issue of why gold fails as money. I think it sets up the presentation very nicely. It gets the audience asking: Who is this Shaykh as-Sufi guy? Who are the Murabitun? Why did they want to bring back gold and silver?

@MBitcoiner @BitcoinMajlis I think you are misreading SAQ's statement. His comment is about a very specific endeavour, not gold per se. He was not unaware of bitcoin, but did not see it as the solution.

Bitcoin is the best fiat, that's a fair argument. But it is essentially not akin to gold. It is artificial and dependent on an entire technological infrastructure to exist. Abstraction over abstraction.

570 years ago Constantinople fell to the onslaught of the Turks. At least they have been honest about it and have not tried to rewrite history. That's the sad story further West, when you look at cities built by Germans, but claimed by later arrivals. greekreporter.com/2023/05/29/may…

@buchmanster @Zoroastras The present predicament is perhaps better understood as a fusion between usurer and states rather than merchants and states...

@QuentinMHB @Zoroastras yes indeed, which is why Braudel refers to "capitalism" as the anti-market. but this rise seems to have required a fusion between merchants and states that for one reason or another didn't happen in Islam, perhaps due to very different conceptions of the personhood of the state!

@buchmanster @Zoroastras I think my point -which i confess is not fully fleshed- is that what develops in the West and rise to hegemony is not an economic system, but an anti-economic system. "Allah has permitted trade and forbidden Riba" (Quran 2:275) you could say the current situation is the opposite

@QuentinMHB @Zoroastras I found Arrighi's The Long Twentieth Century and Drumm's The Difference That Money Makes extremely informative on this. What's still missing for me is connecting through to the inheritance from Islam and what enabled modern capitalism to rise in the west in a way it didnt in east

@buchmanster @Zoroastras To be fair, if you look at 18th, and even 19th century Ottoman or subcontinental societies, they were not really behind... What was decisive was war, and usury... Most of the world has been pillaged before it was "invited" to "develop".

@QuentinMHB @Zoroastras aware of this. same in christianity. the essential q here is why didnt islamic commerce evolve into modern capitalism ? what was different about the italian context that allowed it to ? and how much weight can we put on roman law of personhood and theorizing of body of christ?

@buchmanster @Zoroastras Surely there is a history of modernity that has yet to be fully written... One that sheds more light on the rise of usury as an essential force behind events, first at the service of Sovereigns (states if you wish) until it became strong enough to have Sovereigns serving it..

@QuentinMHB @Zoroastras sure im all for using new words to break out of hangups. but the states definitely benefited from this debtist system, they practically invented it, the whole thing seems based on their permanent deficits fueling a new and enlarged process of accumulation

@buchmanster @Zoroastras I'll leave you to DYOR on the topic, but essentially, Islam does not allow for a party to be exposed to potential profits without also being exposed to losses.. investment rather than debt..

@QuentinMHB @Zoroastras well this could be for consumer loans but surely there are commercial loans as well that don't have this flavour, though the commerce in general may be in the name of Allah there is still a business/profit imperative ...
