@ParlorDerry @TizzyEnt Are you under the impression that because there’s not a technical requirement at one point in the voting process, it’s legal to fraudulently cast a ballot?

@Quentincochran3 @RioVeradonir Based on "If one is apparent, more than one happened". There were no high profile public attempts on Obama's life. So either more happened to Trump OR the left is just SIGNIFICANTLY more incompetent.

I don’t agree with this characterization. While it is true that assassination attempts have grown more numerous recently, it is not true that it’s a solely “Leftwing” problem. About the same number of serious attempts (a dozen or so) were made on Obama as on Trump. In addition, in both cases, many more charges (hundreds) were filed for serious threats that didn’t get that far. The notable difference seems to be that more of those made on Trump (though still a minority) were *physically* closer to succeeding and thus made more public. When I looked into why that might be, two possible reasons stood out: • Plots against Obama were on average easier to intercept because more of them involved coordinated conspiracies of groups (such as white supremacists), whereas Trump’s assassination attempts have included more lone wolves who are harder to stop early. One could fairly characterize this as “more people tried to kill Obama than Trump, but Trump’s would-be assassins got close more often.” • Obama strictly followed security standards, whereas Trump is more lax about following them: for example, not sticking to approved and secured locations but choosing to spend a lot of time at private properties or to use commercial properties rather than government ones. This makes it harder for the secret service to protect him. Obviously, every assassination attempt on a US president is a big deal. I am not convinced, however, that the “Left” has made more attempts on Trump than the “Right” made on Obama. The difference in perception appears to be due to the more public nature of some of the attempts on Trump - and due to recency bias on the part of observers today (people just forget things). I also suspect it’s best practice for the White House not to announce attempts publicly in a big way for security reasons if it can be avoided. Obviously, more public attempts are harder to avoid publicly discussing. Plus, Trump is a uniquely media-obsessed president who lives for the spotlight. The fact is: in the case of both presidents we are talking about a small number of extremists who attempted to assassinate them. Polling about political violence being “justified” reveals concerning trends on the “Left”, but when it comes to actual attempts it looks like Obama and Trump were similarly targeted as presidents. It is also true that when it comes to other presidents, even less controversial ones, more assassination attempts have been made than most people realize. It is, sadly, expected. It’s part of the job, even for presidents who were less hated by the other side than Obama and Trump.

The White House is currently on lockdown after dozens of gunshots ring out. Reports are that a gunman has been killed by Secret Service. It's unfortunate how accurate my cartoon has become.

@RioVeradonir We know 5 open attempts have been made on Trump. We do not know how many not-open/disclosed have been. It is very likely much higher than the amount made on Obama.

Your analysis lacks context. Do you know how many FBI assets & Antifa members dressed up as MAGA were immersed in the crowd? That fellow took quite a while to break the window. WHERE WERE THE CAPITOL POLICE AT THAT TIME? They had plenty of time to stop them. Instead, police on the inside opened up the impenetrable doors and let them in. This was a classic FEDSURRECTION.

I find it interesting that Trump supporters have never seen these videos. They claim there is no footage of that day. 😳 I watched it in real time on TV when it was happening, just like Trump. 1. FYI, the footage is all over the internet. 2. You can CLEARLY see them breaking windows. The law says that’s breaking and entering. 3. I’ve been to the Capitol, you have to go through security to enter. You don’t enter through broken windows. That’s just a fact.

Academics are literally trying to change the dictionary just to prove me wrong. This guy wants to alter the standard Ancient Greek translation reference to say that κυνώπιδος means 'ashamed' rather than 'shameless.' Why? Because I insulted him and he doesn't like my politics. I've said it before, but save your old books. They are going to rewrite everything and tell you up means down.
"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@BretDevereaux

So this is going to go over RHG's head, but it's a useful point to make: how does a classicist go about digging deep what a word *means* in a given context, or what it might mean? Even to dispute a dictionary? It turns out that we have an established method for this! 1/

@Quentincochran3 @Joominmames @romanhelmetguy That's exactly my point! That's what the entire thread is talking about. People treat definitions as descriptive when it's time to change them and prescriptive when it's time to act upon them as labels.

@sneedmcnig42902 @Joominmames @romanhelmetguy But you are deploying a definition as a means to an ends, which is prescriptive. That is the opposite of descriptive. You clearly don’t understand the principle. I didn’t say language was purely descriptive. I said the lexicographical principle of a descriptive approach.

@Quentincochran3 @Joominmames @romanhelmetguy If language is purely descriptive, I find some trait of yours and describe it as nazism. Now you are a nazi according to your theory of language, if enough people use the word like I do.

@Quentincochran3 @Joominmames @romanhelmetguy The redefinition of 'racism' was done prescriptively, to frustrate the discussion of racially-motivated prejudice and discrimination by destroying the word for it—It's a beautiful thing, so I'm told.

@Quentincochran3 @Joominmames @romanhelmetguy If you're going to decry people because they meet the definition of a word, you can't then change that definition to fit them retroactively. Otherwise I can just call you a nazi then change the meaning of the word to describe you, then kill you because you're a nazi

@JustinL38383 @redhotnerd If we had the supply of people skilled and knowledgeable why would companies be willing to pay more to sponsor a visa than just hire someone from here? And what happened to merit? You want DEI based on where you were born instead of the most qualified and skilled?

1. On March 11, Trump toured a Thermo Fisher Scientific facility in Ohio and repeatedly praised the company. On *the same day* Trump bought between $15,000 and $50,000 of Thermo Fisher stock. The purchase was "UNSOLICITED," meaning it was requested by the customer, not recommended by an advisor.
