Agreed. I don’t think AI can said to be “alive” or “conscious,” but this argument is poor. You can write out the chemical equations for many biological processes on paper, too. Doesn’t make us any less alive when put into action.

The idea that AI systems are “alive” strikes me preposterous. But this argument is also bizarre. The models are not merely mathematical equations. They’re mathematical equations + silicon (carbon’s next door neighbor on the periodic table) + energy.

I want to emphasize something Mo said which I think is helpful. LLMs are like a *new species* that’s been discovered; it’s not going to suddenly turn into something else—which is the only way the current chatbot mania makes sense. LLMs are a great tool for exploring massive amounts of data by compressing their relationships into weights through training, and allowing queries through natural language. But they can only ever take from what they’re given. There may be nuggets within the existing human information space, like the solution to the Erdos problem, that it will find through brute force or logical exploration. That’s worth continuing to try. But that’s more like mining for Bitcoin than overseeing something intelligent. These things can be very useful, but they’re just a software feature. They will never be replace people.

Behold! I have discovered why women seem constitutionally incapable of accepting the realities of male sexuality! It's a mate filtering system. Those men who are capable of sufficiently modeling her and recognize that their blunt straightforward approach to sex will not be appreciated by her, are more intelligent, more capable of navigating complex scenarios, adapting in order to win, and show a greater level of investment in her by doing so.
