Can’t speak from experience but it does take a certain kind of person to go into a technically obscure and demanding job knowing full well people will paint you as a villain.
It probably encourages a sense of normalcy as opposed to intellectual arrogance (academia) and savior/willful villain complex (Silicon Valley)

The group of people on Earth who have been most kind, gracious, open-minded, and optimistic are in fund management.
Like, I know I'm supposed to think hedge fund people are cruel or evil or whatever but they're some of the best people I've worked with. More ethical than academics, more intelligent than Silicon Valley.
And I know many people think this is ragebait.
Why does my taste always have to be so fucking WEIRD? That's what this poast is really about. My favorite beer style is the English mild, my favorite Asian dish is roti canai. These are things you've very likely never even heard of.
I don't do it on purpose I swear.

Something that’s interesting to consider is that if some kind of ID verification for porn was implemented, not only would it make it more difficult for kids to access it (it would be naive to think there wouldn’t be any workarounds), it would also dissuade a lot of adults who’d think to themselves “wait, do I really want to watch this so much that I’d be willing to share my personal information? That’s kind of weird… I’ll just step away”
It’s interesting because even though porn consumption is very normalized there’s still a great deal of shame around it. Most people wouldn’t want their public identity to be tied to porn in any way even if they just watch the most milquetoast of stuff.

@fabsbz @47fucb4r8c69323 Think about how we protect children from alcohol and brothers. They turn them away. Why should it be so different online?
Putting the responsibility on parents means that some children will be vulnerable just because their parents are not informed or too stressed.

Seeing Paula post about porn over the last few days has made me think enough about this issue to decide on a stance.
I do not think porn is intrinsically bad (nothing is unless axiomatically or semantically forced), but it is definitely high risk low reward socially.
That is, porn availability has the reward of satiating young men and runs the risk of perverting their desires in ways that can harm themselves and others. That satiation is kind of insufficient for the risk.
But porn can be used responsibly by a regular sex haver.
I only watch porn and masturbate when I'm really hungover, which happens like once a year these days (my heavy drinking days are behind me). That seems healthy or at least not damaging to anyone.
But some of the porn out there is grotesque and damaging, although I want actual quantitative data before we start talking about changing laws. I hate restricting freedom.
There is, however, a part of the porn world that needs the most focus and gets the least, partly because they're not white people and Americans are weird about this shit: Japanese loli porn.
Some of that stuff is straight up fantasizing about violently raping prepubescent children and some of the actresses are small enough that they can convincingly play the part.
If this lowers incidence of child abuse, then wonderful, but I somehow doubt that is the case (would like to see studies).
If it doesn't lower said incidence, this is a rare case where I might support extending censorship laws.
It goes against my principles, and I am a flexible person.

@xlr8harder Dunking on Dawkins painting him as a decrepit old man has been a Twitter sport for at least a decade now
English

A lot of people responding to this without engaging with the actual point he is making. Which fine, it's paywalled, but making up an opinion for him and dunking on it just makes you look foolish.

@47fucb4r8c69323 Moving away from taking politics seriously is always a good thing. Last few years have been exhausting

I actually think this is good, because he's losing his audience to Candace.
Most of her audience doesn't take her seriously. It's lolcow entertainment.
But when they listened to Shapiro, they took him seriously as if he's a political voice.
But they got sick of that and it got stale so people went further on the fringe, and as they did so the reason they're listening changed, subtly on a shallow gradient, and unbeknownst to them they really just stopped caring about politics at all, except for their team's totems.
That's why they were furious about Charlie Kirk, but only for a brief moment and not really.
It was like someone broke a bottle of Molson Ice on their hockey team's mascot, eh?
This means Americans are moving away from caring about politics entirely.
That may be a good thing.
