Medieval Combat in a village/city The conditions of medieval combat in urban city or village settings are often not really documented. By piecing together the chronicles, we can understand that these environments could be riddled with traps and obstacles. Ranging from barricades made of furniture and wooden barriers to street chains and caltrops capable of violently knocking someone to the ground, it was a significant risk. It also depended on the local population; there are frequent accounts of inhabitants throwing logs from windows at attackers and even defenders, as in Paris on April 13, 1436, when Parisians ambushed the English in the streets. It was also such a risky way to make a battle in a main street that even at Saint-Florentin in the summer of 1417, the Burgundian and Armagnac armies did not charge and they reached an agreement instead of a bloodbath.
