Personally I do not expect the current demand to be sustained, but if it actually is, supply and demand will take effect in the medium-run.

@johnfsymons as opposed to, say, paying another human to do the work - "everyone paying someone else to do it" doesn't scale, whereas "everyone using an AI to do it" can.

We're going to have to change our courses/assignments immediately to deal with the effects of AI on higher Ed. This coming school year faculty in writing intensive courses will notice a dramatic improvement in the quality of student written work.

Absolutely not - if you want to serve anywhere even kinda far from the equator, especially from LEO, you're going to be in an inclined orbit. And at *lots of different inclinations* overall.

@wramented @dankmemesdoot why do satellites come close to colliding so often when the "surface" of LEO is even bigger than Earth's surface and relatively little up there? I'd think that they'd all be going roughly the same speed and direction for orbital mechanics reasons.

@GunsAndRockets1 @SciGuySpace Falcon heavy is a powerful rocket, but, it does not have lifting power to get Orian to the correct orbit. SLS flight 2 is in the VAB and SLS flight 3 is getting built at the contractors and will be shipped to KSC. TBA on the delivery date.

Kind of wild that this happened, but multiple people have told me Boeing took the step of meeting with employees about SLS layoffs without informing NASA. arstechnica.com/space/2025/02/…

@Willrandship @_sn_n The price of lithium has varied over a range of more than 10x over the past few years and is currently holding at around 3x 2020 prices.

Lithium is not rare. "Profitably extractable lithium with current standard hardware" is rare, because we'd rather scrape lithium-rich salt crust than dig up mud and wash it. Double the price of lithium and you at least 10x the usable deposits. Basically any salt flat has tons of it in the mud 1-2 feet down. This is true for every natural resource.

@PPGMacro I'm still confused by why the housing units under construction shot up and stayed wildly elevated around 2020/2021 while there was no comparably sized change in housing starts or housing completions. Just abruptly started taking longer?

Not surprising given that the huge amount of homes under construction has started to fall. The question is when do construction jobs start to fall? First, one reduces hiring. Next one starts firing.

long term nuclear waste storage is really cool and interesting thematically and in terms of vibes, but the idea kinda falls apart once you learn that nuclear waste isn't as big of an issue as you might think it is
