AFRICAN & BLACK HISTORY@AfricanArchives

In the history of the American civil rights movement, some victories changed the nation even though the people behind them are rarely remembered. Lloyd Gaines was one of those individuals. In 1935, Gaines graduated from Lincoln University in Missouri and dreamed of becoming a lawyer. When he applied to the University of Missouri School of Law, his application was rejected for one reason alone. He was Black. At the time, Missouri argued that instead of admitting him, it could pay for him to attend law school in another state. Gaines refused to accept that injustice. With the support of the NAACP and attorney Charles Hamilton Houston, he challenged the decision in court. The case reached the United States Supreme Court as Missouri ex rel. Gaines v. Canada in 1938. The Court ruled in Gaines' favor, declaring that Missouri could not satisfy its constitutional obligations by sending Black students elsewhere. If the state operated a law school for white students, it had to provide an equal legal education within Missouri for Black students as well. The decision became one of the earliest major victories against segregation in higher education and laid important legal groundwork for later landmark cases, including Brown v. Board of Education. Yet the story took a heartbreaking turn. Just months after his historic Supreme Court victory, Lloyd Gaines disappeared. In March 1939, he left his room in Chicago, telling friends he was going to buy stamps. He was never seen again. Despite investigations and countless theories, no confirmed evidence has ever explained what happened to him. His disappearance remains one of the great unsolved mysteries in American legal history. @Finalbossjimmy @thirdeyemafia I keep forgetting how sad and badly we talk to each other. Dude asked a relevant question and instead of having a conversation you decide to insult the brotha. WTF is wrong with you. This is the definition of a crab. Instead of solutions and honest conversations you insult

On this day in 2005, Anthony Walker, 18, died after he was chased from a bus stop in Merseyside & murdered in a racist & unprovoked attack. The teenager was savagely attacked with an ice axe and left to die at a park entrance. Rest in peace Anthony Walker 🙏🏾🕊️

You’ve probably seen Africa’s Indigenous Maasai community used as props for famous white people from the West. But this upcoming Kenyan action game is flipping the script and making the Maasai the main character. w/ @yelmjouie
