Delighted to host Allyson Williams MBE in the Mayoral Parlour today, and a real honour to be presented with her book, 'Tell Me Something I Don't Know'. The title reflects her catch-phrase used to survive the racism she suffered as a young adult training to be a nurse, during her life journey from Trinidad to London as part of the Windrush Generation.
We had a lovely chat over tea, and I can't wait to get reading. Thank you, Allyson, for your contribution to our great country and Borough.

Revealed: McDonald’s are planning to to open a new restaurant at the end of Southend Pier – becoming the UK’s first “Sail-Thru” service!
McDonald’s has announced plans to open a new restaurant at the far end of Southend Pier, making it the longest walk to a Big Mac in the UK.
The unique location will not only cater to visitors arriving by foot or Pier train, but will also feature the country’s first-ever “Sail-Thru” service, allowing passing paddleboarders, kayakers, and small boats to pick up their meals without stepping off their vessels.
"A One-of-a-Kind Dining Experience"
Set to open in time for next summer’s tourist season, the new McDonald’s will offer stunning views of the Thames Estuary while providing the familiar fast-food experience.
McDonald’s Head of Growth, Kevin Williams, described the location as “a bold new step in waterfront dining,” adding that “whether you arrive by train, foot, or paddleboard, your McNuggets will be hot, fresh, and just a little bit saltier from the sea breeze.”
The “Sail-Thru” service will operate much like a traditional drive-thru, with a designated collection point where boaters can place and receive their orders. Safety measures will be in place to ensure smooth service, including a floating queue system and McDonald’s have said they’re working on special waterproof takeaway packaging.
To accommodate the pier’s unpredictable weather and the high volume of foot traffic, McDonald’s says it is working closely with Southend City Council on a sustainability plan. The restaurant will be powered in part by solar panels, and deliveries will be coordinated with the pier’s existing supply routes to minimise disruption.
Despite the challenges, McDonald’s remains confident that the project will be a success. “Southend Pier is the longest pleasure pier in the world,” Kevin Williams added, “and we’re excited to make it home to the most unique McDonald’s in the UK.”
Construction is expected to begin later this year, with an official opening planned for summer 2026.
We have contacted Southend City Council for comment.
