That's right. Restaurants employ nearly 1.2 million workers in Canada. That number represents 6% of the country's workforce and is greater than Real Estate, Forestry, Utilities, Agriculture, Fishing, Mining, Oil and Gas Extraction industries COMBINED. Talk about a powerhouse industry! Our impact runs deep. 👉 Hit the "Follow" button to learn more about the foodservice industry and Restaurants Canada's advocacy efforts.

Rural restaurants are waiting to hear from provincial governments on whether they will receive a temporary reprieve for their labour force challenges through the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) cap increase, says Restaurants Canada. On March 13, the federal government announced it would temporarily increase the cap on TFWs in rural regions experiencing severe labour shortages, but only if the province officially requests it. While April 1 was the first day employers could potentially participate in this change, most have yet to hear from their provincial governments. Full statement and more details here: bit.ly/4bYX6FC

Restaurants Canada has been calling for a targeted approach to immigration that includes taking into account the needs of rural, remote and tourism areas, where the pool of qualified or available workers can be insufficient or where needs may vary by time of year. Access to a reliable and predictable source of labour is essential to the economic and social fabric of these communities. TFWs account for just 3% of our workforce but help fill critical gaps that allow restaurants to continue operating and provide jobs for Canadians. Full statement here: bit.ly/4uxz7pO @KHHigginson

Policy needs to meet the moment we are in: address affordability, stimulate growth, create youth jobs. Cut the GST on all food. Thanks @FoodProfessor for keeping this front and centre. Foodisfood.ca @RestaurantsCA
The Food Professor@FoodProfessor

Instead of spending $12.3B we don’t have on so-called “grocery rebates,” why not cut the GST on food altogether? That would directly help singles, seniors, and low-income households—right away. cbc.ca/news/politics/…

Fueling communities, one job at a time. The foodservice industry — Canada's fourth-largest employer — is a powerful engine for the economy, offering opportunities across the board.

It was a pleasure to attend the State of the Province 2026 last night hosted by the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce. Great to hear from the Premier about where we're at and what's ahead.

Got up bright and early for a marathon of interviews this morning. 14 radio stations and 1 TV apperance. We're sounding the alarm. The restaurant industry is in crisis. 41% of restaurants in Canada aren't profitable (that was 12% in 2019) with no reprieve in sight! Thanks to my colleague @RCFederalCA for being my partner in crime this morning! He also spoke to 14 radio stations across the country!

The demographic realities in NB, and all of Atlantic Canada, need to be addressed. The federal government's drastic cuts to economic immigration are having massive impacts in our communities. I'm encouraged to see some openess from Minister @DLeBlancNB , but we need action asap!

________________________________________________ Our Vice-President, Quebec, Marie-Pier Richard, joined the Mayor of Quebec City on Tuesday to call for more access to immigration streams as restaurants have been shut out of the new Skilled Worker selection program. The uncertainty created by the new system is putting Quebec restaurants and their workers at risk.

A year ago today, the government introduced the temporary GST/HST holiday in response to the cost-of-living crisis. Since the holiday ended, food inflation has risen at almost double the rate of general inflation, but the federal government hasn’t introduced any new measures to provide immediate and direct cost relief to Canadians. Sign our petition today, to remove tax from ALL FOOD at foodisfood.ca

Restaurants Canada has been calling for the permanent removal of GST/HST on all food, and they are right. Eliminating the tax would generate $5.4 billion in consumer savings annually, create more than 64,000 foodservice jobs, add more than 15,000 jobs in related sectors, and support the opening of more than 2,600 new restaurants across the country. No other affordability measure available to the federal government delivers this combination of economic stimulus and direct relief.
