Man was Duncan Keith fun to watch play the game of ice hockey. He was so OCD about his gear that he had a locker full of sticks in the equipment room where he could signal to trainers “hey fella go get me that Easton from game 6 of the 2013 western conference finals” and the trainer would hurry back with that exact piece of lumber. He was always changing up brands, curves, flexes, length you name it. A complete freak when it came to how detailed he was with his gear. Duncan Keith made me fall in love with hockey. How competitive he was. How good his feet were. How big of a machine he was but most importantly how he never EVER backed down from anybody. DK2 redefined how defenseman defended in the neutral zone. Instead of backing up and angling guys to areas inside their own blue line, Keith would skate forward at guys and a lot of the time cut the ice in half. A tactic in modern day coaches teach called “surfing”. Where he would skate forward at you and not only hold his own blue line but more often than not hold the redline forcing a turnover or an icing. Duncan Keith was so good at it - he modernized the way to play defense. When you look at some of the best defenseman to ever play the game, his name might not be in the first 5-10. But for me the way he changed the game in an era I grew up watching- he is my GOAT. 3 cups. 2 Norris’. 1 Conn Smythe. Cap tip to you #2 HOF CLASS OF 25’ -Swish
