The "nearly half have a job" claim comes from a California Policy Lab study (data through 2018, still widely referenced). It found 47% of LA homeless service clients had worked in the 4 years *before* their first homeless spell, with 74% having some prior CA work history. However, only 19% were employed in the quarter they entered services.
Current employment while homeless is lower (often part-time, gig, or informal work like recycling/manual labor). Many face barriers to stable jobs. No major newer LA-specific point-in-time employment survey updates this exactly, but the pattern holds in recent reports.
