@moebius_strip The nice thing is that folks from the boat have been carefully spread around the world (often with flights, taxi rides, etc) interacting with people everywhere as opposed to just keeping them all in one place for a while.

I am once again asking Albertans to include the word weekend. It's the May Long WEEKEND. I am prepared to die on this hill.

@moebius_strip I hate all lectures (pretty much, except for awesome ones), as a student lectures were torture. They move way to slow. Online, I can at least watch them at 1.75x.

"Students can't deal with being exposed to ideas they disagree with!" Fine, but how amenable are non-student adults to sitting through 20-30-minute speeches by people they disagree with? When do we even see captive audiences of adults *outside* an academic environment?

Here is my heterodox opinion: I'm a fan of @JonHaidt and I think the students are being snowflakes etc HOWEVER it's possible that the adults saying so are every bit as snowflakey, but we've never tested whether that's the case, because adults are never in similar environments
Benjamin Ryan@benryanwriter

NYU professor @JonHaidt, who has stood at the forefront of the movement to challenge academia’s culture of suppressing the free exchange of ideas, is facing a campaign to cancel his graduation address. nytimes.com/2026/05/13/us/…

Each time Alberta has established an Electoral Boundaries Commission to redraw election maps the government has accepted the commission’s majority report, so I was surprised and disappointed to learn that a committee of MLAs has instead been tasked with creating a new map. /1

Such a bummer knowing left wing transit advocacy groups are going to spend the next few decades campaigning against autonomously driven buses (which could drastically increase service hours) because they prioritize the demands of transit unions, not the riding public.
Joakim 🌹🇳🇴🇪🇺@joakial_

For the first time in Norwegian history, a bus will carry passengers in regular traffic without any human behind the wheel. The first pilot without a safety driver was tested Friday, and if all goes as planned, anyone can ride driverless buses starting in May.

@moebius_strip @willems_steph It depends on what is motivating the people. Cuba’s government is a dictatorship and the people lack many freedoms. However, they are not threatening Canada’s sovereignty.

Just had a convo with coworker. They said they'd never spend a CENT in the U.S., and it's the last place they'd ever visit! 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦 #elbows #freedom *same breath* They say they'd go to Cuba in a heartbeat, doesn't matter if there's no electricity or food.

okay I guess I have to talk about Péter Magyar here. Let me just start with saying, in a very unladylike way, that you guys seem to have zero clue what happened in Hungary in the last two years, you completely miss the point, and you're a disappointing bunch. Let's go.

I just realized that the social justice left actually has a ready-made response to proposals such as "we should create a national grocery chain that pays union wages and saves customers 30-45%": "Impact matters more than intent"

It's funny Avi Lewis supporters appear to have have never really looked at his platform in detail because the policies are mostly retreads and things that have been tried and failed before both here and in other jurisdictions elsewhere. Here is me on one achemistinlangley.net/2019/05/07/on-…

The *impossible* riding of Vancouver Centre? He pulled 12.5% of the vote, in a riding where the NDP have frequently been second including almost defeating Kim Campbell! He got the 2nd lowest vote share ever for an NDP candidate in Centre. NDP got almost 31% of the vote in 2021.
Tyler Meredith@tylermeredith

I’ve heard this claim before - that Avi Lewis “isn’t a politician” It’s kinda funny. He’s actually run as an NDP candidate 2x before (in 2021 and 2025 elections) — and come third both times. He’s also a legacy NDPer. He’s a politician. He just doesn’t want you to think that.

If freedom prevails, future academics will need to look back and study why universities provided basically zero resistance to the rise of authoritarianism. In any other administration there would have been massive protests over this single interview.

FCC Chair: Trump is winning. Look at the results—PBS and NPR defunded. Joy Reid, Sleepy-Eyed Chuck Todd, Jim Acosta, John Dickerson are gone. Colbert is leaving. CBS is under new ownership, and soon enough CNN will have new ownership as well.

One fun thing about owning a home in San Francisco is that it’s illegal to replace my street-facing windows with new energy-efficient and sound-insulating double pane designs because busybodies at the planning department think they look tacky. default.sfplanning.org/publications_r…

Americans devised a nationwide landscape-altering land use regime to avoid building structures that keep noise out, but it is not resilient against novel threats. Might I suggest…triple-glazed tilt-and-turn windows? nytimes.com/2023/06/30/spo…

@CompletedStreet Edmonton does not have growth boundaries but has led North America in zoning reform, does have minimum densities and, until recently, had strong regional provisions against ‘leapfrog’ growth.

@moebius_strip @Barb_Here I found Cuba intriguing due to its rather strong state capacity relative to other poor nations I have visited. If they had followed China and Vietnam’s models and allowed markets to function, they could have done tremendously well. I also understand they are a totalitarian state

I'm following the latest influencer trip to Cuba and man. Anyone with a modicum of curiosity and whose brain is not 100% rotted understands that tourism-Cuba and resident-Cuba are completely different worlds, but American tankies can't even clear that bar
