@maxdubler You can’t buy modern wood windows? They are common in my area of Canada - expensive but easy to get and built to a very high standard.

One fun thing about owning a home in San Francisco is that it’s illegal to replace my street-facing windows with new energy-efficient and sound-insulating double pane designs because busybodies at the planning department think they look tacky. default.sfplanning.org/publications_r…

Market Urbanism@MarketUrbanism

Americans devised a nationwide landscape-altering land use regime to avoid building structures that keep noise out, but it is not resilient against novel threats. Might I suggest…triple-glazed tilt-and-turn windows? nytimes.com/2023/06/30/spo…

@CompletedStreet Edmonton does not have growth boundaries but has led North America in zoning reform, does have minimum densities and, until recently, had strong regional provisions against ‘leapfrog’ growth.

@CompletedStreet Loads of Canadian urbanists jumping on to label Edmonton as “massively sprawling” but the original poster is comparing it to American cities which are much much more sprawling with more discontiguous growth.

Edmonton. There's much less sprawl in Canada. I admire their urban growth boundaries.

@moebius_strip @Barb_Here I found Cuba intriguing due to its rather strong state capacity relative to other poor nations I have visited. If they had followed China and Vietnam’s models and allowed markets to function, they could have done tremendously well. I also understand they are a totalitarian state

@LukaszukAB As much as Kenney’s tone is hyperbolic, the Iranian regime is a terrible regime which has sponsored terrorism throughout the Middle East and they were producing a nuclear bomb. There were other pathways to prevent that , but keeping Iran from having nuclear bombs was critical.

@ExnerPirot @wilsonfink15 Approximately 10-15% of all oil production is used for things other than burning it for energy. You would still have that production even if we reduce the amount of oil and gas used for energy.

@wilsonfink15 Do you see that to me what you’re saying is we need to pivot away from fertilizer, plastics, resins, chemicals, air travel, heavy machinery i.e. industrialization We cannot sustain 8.5 billion people without very substantial hydrocarbons

Some of you still seem to think oil is only used for gasoline for light duty vehicles, because that’s the only time you’ve physically encountered it. Expensive and scarce oil is an omnicrisis for the global economy. It cannot be replaced by electrons from solar panels.

This should have been on the front page of The New York Times. I speak to students in America and most have no idea that more than 30,000 Iranians were killed for protesting and demanding freedom. No names. No faces. No coverage. This silence kills me.💔 Thank you, Australia.

Platform screen doors are going in on Madrid Metro Line 6. The cost to add them to 28 stations is $150 million CAD, or $5.4 million per station. The TTC's cost for installing Platform Screen Doors at 70 subway stations is $4.2 billion or $60 million per station.

1/ Messages hacked from a Russian general's phone illustrate the sweeping scale of corruption at all levels of the Russian army. They highlight a top-to-bottom pyramid of extortion and bribery to obtain promotions and influence, plus scams and theft of military resources. ⬇️

@m_boustani @ksadjadpour @anneapplebaum I know that the President is a weak role typically in Iran, but with no Supreme leader and the clerics and IRGC fractured, he has some visibility and institutional legitimacy that other possible emergent leaders would not have.
