I am lost for words. Met an author who loftily informed me he was published by the 'big boys.' On discovering I was indie published, he adopted a 'dog shit moustache' & said. 'You must feel such a failure. Everyone knows no one reads anything unless it's published properly."

How would you respond to this statement: If you have to self-publish, then your books probably are not any good. I'll start: (A little long winded but accurate) I understand your perceptionโ€”and yes, traditional publishing does have "built-in" vetting, and that can be reassuring. But it's "not accurate to assume" that self-publishing means a book isnโ€™t any good. In fact, some of the most successful and widely read authors started by self-publishing. For example, The Martian by Andy Weir (2011) was originally self-published before being picked up by a major publisher and turned into a blockbuster movie. Similarly, E.L. Jamesโ€™s Fifty Shades of Grey started as a self-published (2011) eBook and went on to sell over 150 million copies. On platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, thousands of authors have built loyal readerships and made full-time incomesโ€”some earning six or even seven figures a year. According to a 2023 report by Written Word Media, nearly 30% of full-time authors were self-published only, and they earned more on average than hybrid or traditionally published authors. Self-publishing also opens doors for stories that traditional publishing might overlookโ€”especially books from underrepresented voices, niche genres, or unconventional formats. So while "traditional publishing" offers certain advantages, self-publishing is far from a last resortโ€”itโ€™s a valid, often strategic choice that can lead to both critical and commercial success."

Driving home from last nightโ€™s New Year party I had a gushing nosebleed, which is a rare once a decade event for me. Not sure what kind of omen that signifies for my 2025..? ๐Ÿค”

Good grief @HelloMarkLowery what have you done to me? Our Academy bought one copy of โ€œCharlie and Meโ€ for every year six student joining our secondary school. Nothing prepared me for that ending. I have red eyes and a soggy nose. #childrensbooks #mgnovels #readersofinsta
