You don't need either when you're using an RMA Level IV plate. All of our Level IV plates are standalone rated, so you'll get the full protection as advertised with or without backers.
However, a lot of people get trauma pads or IIIA soft backers anyway. Why?
Trauma pads will reduce blackface deformation in the event of an impact. Plus, they'll be more comfortable against your body than the hard plate.
Level IIIA soft armor inserts will also help with BFD and comfort, but additionally add more ballistic protection. You can also use IIIA inserts for other things such as hidden backpack inserts or as a concealed IIIA vest.
