As Apollo 15 returned to Earth 55 years ago today, a first-of-its-kind sample was stowed onboard. For the first time, astronauts had drilled and collected a sample from 2.4 meters beneath the Moon's surface. 🧵A thread…

On This Day — August 3, 1934 Muslim mobs in Constantine, Algeria started a three-day rampage against the city’s Jews. They cut throats. They crushed skulls. In total, 25 Jewish men, women, and children were murdered; and another 26 were wounded. Additionally, more than 200 Jewish shops were looted and destroyed. Synagogues and homes were ransacked. The violence spilled into Algeria’s countryside for 100 kilometers. Jews were killed in Hamma and Mila. In Ain Beida, 314 Jews packed up and left for good. Meanwhile, the French police stood by and watched it all happen. The trigger was supposedly a street argument. But the real causes ran deeper: centuries of Jews living as second-class dhimmis under Muslim rule, anger over the Crémieux Decree that made Algerian Jews French citizens, and open antisemitism that was always present. Jews had lived in Algeria for 2,700 years, long before Islam. After independence in 1962, the new “Muslim Algeria” had no place for Jews. By the 2010s the last remaining Jews were gone. A community of 130,000 was erased. The Constantine pogrom was one chapter in the story of Jews living as a minority in Muslim-controlled lands. Until suddenly, all the Jews were gone.

Watched “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” A lonely hero. A lonely Spidey. A lonely Peter Parker. It felt fresh, and I really enjoyed it. Until now, Spider-Man films have generally been grouped into self-contained trilogies. With each new iteration, the cast and creative team changed, allowing the franchise to reinvent itself for a new era. This time, however, while both the cast and the story continue from the previous film, everything has been reset. The film focuses on Peter, once again alone, and the loneliness and inner conflict that come with that. It can be seen both as the beginning of a new series and as a direct continuation of the last one. A very clever structure. In the age of social media and its immense power to amplify every opinion, striking the right balance between what filmmakers want to create and what audiences expect has become incredibly difficult. Genuine, heartfelt filmmaking is becoming increasingly challenging. Because of that, this is a film that puts the “Brand” in “Brand New Day” to the test, as part of a blockbuster franchise that simply cannot afford to fail. 🕷️

Wow. To prove Islam is a religion of peace and Muslims are not violent, she says: well, only IF you didn't have a security detail. Only IF Muslims were waiting outside to kill you. Oh sorry, to beat you up. I am from Iran. For me it is not "beat you up." Muslims are waiting outside to hang me if we just say that we don’t want to practice Islam anymore! I am from Iran. I don't need to imagine what happens without that security detail. I KNOW.

You can’t convince a generation who doesn’t want to fuck to suddenly embrace wine. They’re absolutely intertwined. In the 90s, half of my countless conquests began with a bottle of Cab Sav, which I brought over. One bottle led me to my true vintage, if you know what I’m saying…
Zack Stentz@MuseZack

I'm not even joking when I say the answer here is to make a new Sideways that makes wine drinking seem fun and aspirational instead of stodgy and off-putting to younger millennials and Gen Z.

@RMBee It's almost as if you could make a movie where switching from drinking White Claws to wine symbolizes the main character moving from a perpetual adolescence to a fully realized adulthood with all its joys and sorrows.

@RMBee Easy, he claims we need more content moderation and censorship on social media and the squelching of a bunch of heterodox views over the past many years wasn't really a problem. That's a tool.

Bookstores now banning Jewish authors. This looks increasingly like the 1930s, and big media are utterly silent, promoting the likes of Hasan Puker and Traitor Qatarlson.

THIS IS NOT THE NASHVILLE WAY. Shame on #bellbirdbooks - a new bookstore that was planning on launching Nashville photographer Alyssa Rosenheck’s new book #WhiteBlondeJew until bookstore owner Mary Ann Weprin caved to hatred, bigotry and ignorance and cancelled the launch. Oddly, she previously stated Bell Bird Books “look forward to featuring a diverse slate of authors and perspectives from all walks of life as our programming continues to grow." Except for Jews I guess. I’ll be buying Alyssa’s book elsewhere. Hate has no place in Nashville.

On This Day — August 2, 1391 Spain has a long memory when it comes to its Jews, and a short one when it comes to its own history. A mob of rural peasants gathered outside Majorca, wounded the governor, then turned on the Jewish quarter. For hours they murdered and looted. Somewhere between 180 and 300 Jews were killed. Hundreds more fled or took refuge in the royal castle. After two months of being trapped inside the castle, the Jewish survivors were given a choice: convert or die. They converted. The promises made to them were broken almost immediately. This was only one chapter in the 1391 massacres that tore across Spain. Thousands of Jews murdered. Tens of thousands forcibly baptized. The conversos who came out of it lived for generations under suspicion, violence, and eventually the Inquisition. It's one of history's constants: Jews as the scapegoat. Whenever economic rage and social pressure have needed a target, the Jews were available. Some patterns in Spanish history have a way of echoing.

The 56 countries that are members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation believe that their nations must be Islamic. As such, they do not permit other religions to be ascendant. As such, why can’t Western nations proclaim that they do not wish for Islam to gain a foothold in their societies? Why must the West commit Civilizational Seppuku?
