From time to time, folks will see a discussion of of my work going on and say, "I didn't know you worked on (fill in the gap)." Hence, this video.... youtu.be/zDJ6lIDI2-8

@straczynski Wow I didn’t know the writer of the second Spider-Man run I ever read had a Twitter. Your run had such a positive effect on my life. Thank you.

He doesn't hold a ton of degrees, but he does have his masters' degree from ESU and more than enough work experience (lab scientist, research assistant, and others) to qualify for a high school gig.

@straczynski Physics, mathematics, etc.? One more thing, if it's not too much trouble. What's on the man's resume? I'm curious to know.

@ThisIsATestTai Honestly, there are like five hundred variations on this answer...I don't think there was ever a 100% non-negotiable canonical answer.

@straczynski I can't believe I'm correcting the guy who wrote the first Spider-Man comics I read, but... didn't Peter canonically only have a Bachelor's Degree at this point? He dropped out of his Master's program (twice) and then could get a high school teaching job with just the Bachelor's.

@aranotti Pretty cool. I'm curious if J. Michael Straczynski, who got his start on the Ghostbusters anime before going on the bigger things, is a name anybody in Japan would recognize?

And speaking of vague "science" degrees...this. Give it a minute, you'll understand. (And if you haven't already seen The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra, you've missed something wonderful.) youtube.com/watch?v=H5UyIN…

And the person who *was* going to be teaching science bailed at the last minute, so that left a shortage that allows someone like Peter to jump in under the NYC Alternate Certification Program and several other NYC fast-track programs.
Oculporate@AdamOculporate

@abhishek83738 @straczynski So only qualified to teach highschool in exceptional circumstances like a labor shortage, temp replacement, or if also hired as a Lab/tech co-ordinator.

So many replies of, "If you're so smart, asshole, what are the different-sized holes in the dodecahedrons for? Huh? HUH?" Fine. I'll tell you EXACTLY what the different-sized holes cut into the sharp metal edges of the dodecahedrons were for. Chariot drive-thru circumcisions.

@T3ssaGrant Because I needed to make a photo to illustrate the process, and I don't have one of those devices hanging around to take a photo of it.

They would have been made for people with money. The holes are more uniform than not in most cases. AND: I just found out that we are still using versions of this, called Jute Balls, or Jute Spheres.
Lala Sara@Lala_Sara

@straczynski 1) it's too pricy for such a simple device - these things were made with pricy material and making it required great blacksmith skill. 2) different size holes (that are not "regulated" - different sets on each one). 3) modern plastic ones for knitters would be a thing then.

Also: when spooling the dodecahedron with thread, you would have covered one pentagonal face at a time, finishing one then doing a simple tie before looping it down to the next. That way you could tell how much you had with a glance, and one coming loose wouldn't affect the rest

This also explains why the vertices/balls on the device were generally a different, more decorative color than the rest, since they would be the only parts sticking out.

@straczynski Great theory but wouldn't you imagine that a spindle would be a simpler idea to arrive at first? Perhaps this is a sign of the limits of my imagination!

Things appear when they appear. Spools as we know them didn't really get going until the period of the Napoleonic Wars. Before that they were just handed out in "hanks" (coils), balls or skeins that could get easily tangled. This design would have prevented that.

The holes would also have helped keep the thread dry, avoiding mold. The the threads would have rotted away centuries ago, leaving just the round spool behind.
