The darkest liturgy in the Christian tradition is not a funeral. It is a disappearance. The Tenebrae, 'Shadows', is sung in Holy Week. It begins with 15 candles burning. One by one, after each psalm, a candle is extinguished. The church grows darker. The voices grow quieter. The final candle, the Christus candle, is not blown out. It is hidden. The choir chants in total darkness, then silence, then a single violent percussion strike, the strepitus, filling the empty church. The earthquake. The Church has performed this liturgy for fifteen centuries without revision. The abandonment of God, not his death, his abandonment, lands harder in the dark.
