Grumpy Geologist. The stuff I write are my own views and not necessarily the most sensible.

Kicking off 2025 with a trip to the Giants Causeway! 🌋 Was great to see the iconic lava flows of the British and Irish Paleogene Province in-situ! We’re lucky enough to have some samples from the Giants Causeway in the @NHM_Petrology collection! 🪨 #VMSG_MDSG25

@RNArmstrong1 These were grown in hydroponics dosed with thallium, but thallium accumulation (and human health risks) occur on sites in Italy with contaminated by mine drainage from sulphide mining.

Recent experiment at beamline P06 of PETRA III, DESY looking at the nature of highly thallium-enriched crystals in the hyperaccumulator plant Brassica oleraceae with synchrotron X-ray diffraction mapping. These crystals contain > 40wt% thallium and occur around vascular bundles.

@AidaGreenbury @EntAntony how does this land area compare to that lost to agriculture, urban spread, and non-mining related infrastructure. Yes mining leads to forestry clearance, but perhaps the total forested land loss should be flagged as the most important point?

Indonesia tops the list of deforestation due to mining, with more than 3,600 km2 of forest lost, causing carbon emissions of around 132 million tonnes. The research estimated that globally 16,785 km2mining-induced deforestation has led to the release of approximately 490 million tons of CO2. phys.org/news/2024-11-f…

Regarding the driven grouse shooting debate, there’s a long overdue class analysis to be done on working class gamekeeper employees in light of their landed gentry employers. Which is why we should crowdfund @ewangibbs to do a year long ethnographic study on the moors.

Really excited to see our #openaccess paper out today! Great work led by @LamontsterTN1 suggesting Laramide porphyry #copper deposits in the western USA resulted from water-fluxed crustal melting during flat-slab subduction. Huge thanks to @bhp & @isotopesUK for funding! 🌟🌵🌎🇺🇲

A thread... With the ongoing terrible situation in Valencia, there are many images of ‘car imbrication' appearing on Social Media with people claiming that this is the same process as that seen in sedimentary particles. (1/6)
