$DLTR cut its guidance for full-year adjusted EPS to a range of $5.20 to $5.60, down -20% at the midpoint from prior guidance of $6.50 to $7.00; shares of $DLTR are off by about -11% to -12% in the pre-market.

A Dollar General appreciation post, and an inflation-bashing post. This is the Dollar General in Buchanan VA, near my hometown of Blue Ridge. Like many DG, this is the only place you can buy groceries and essentials that is in-town. To go to a large grocery store requires a longer drive to another town. DG fills a vital niche. 60% of shoppers make $35k or less a year. 50% of shoppers are on SNAP (food stamps). DG just reported terrible results and the stock tanked 32%. Quote: “It appears to us very strongly that ... this lower-end consumer continues to be very much financially strapped, especially as it relates to her ability to feed her families and support her families.” SNAP gets a COLA adjustment annually, but it can’t keep up with the wicked level of food inflation we have experienced over the past few years. These people are being squeezed relentlessly in a vice and they should be mad as hell at the Federal Gov (current and previous WH, Congress) for the fiscal policies that have stoked this inflation. Policies like the Inflation Reduction Act, PPP, and trillions in pandemic stimies. The workers on the lowest end of the income spectrum are also the first to be fired or have their hours reduced, which could be an indicator of recession. DG gets heat for being run-down, dirty, low quality, etc. But I love DG. They are relentless about keeping prices down, and they locate in the communities that other grocers dare not tread.
