It was a privilege to meet with Mr. Dumisani Sondlo in our South African offices this week. I believe he currently stewards one of the most consequential portfolios for the future of our country. As an architect of our National AI Policy he is helping to define the terms of South Africa’s economic sovereignty for years to come. How we navigate this transition will directly determine the future of employment in our country. We have to grow meaningful human participation in the economy as we unlock new opportunities for our people. I look forward to continuing to engage with Dumisani in the months ahead.

This year, the connection between our nations went far beyond formal diplomacy. It was deeply personal and cultural. We were honored to participate in the Fox Hill Emancipation Day Festivities and experience the incredible energy of the Junkanoo midnight rush together with the Hon. Fred Mitchell. It was equally a privilege to be received by Her Excellency Dame Cynthia A. Pratt O.N., GCMG, and to host a visit to the South African Consulate in Albany. As we close 2025, I must give a big end-of-year thank you to the Government of The Bahamas, particularly Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Fred Mitchell, and Ambassador Jerusa Ali. You showed South Africa so much courtesy and warmth during the year. In my Op-Ed, I highlighted this special relationship: "No one embodies this enduring bond between South Africa and The Bahamas more fully than the Hon. Fred Mitchell... His advocacy is remembered with deep gratitude by South Africa." South Africa is eager to deepen our partnership even further in the coming year. Here is to a prosperous 2026! It has been a year of profound reflection and strengthened ties between South Africa and The Bahamas. As we approach the end of 2025, I am looking back at some of the most significant moments, particularly the visit of Acting High Commissioner Phumeza Mukendi in August. We had the distinct honor of meeting with Prime Minister the Hon. Philip Davis and touring the beautiful National Art Gallery of The Bahamas. These engagements, supported by the professionalism and courtesy of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and the Royal Bahamas Police Force throughout the official visit, were a reminder of the deep history we share. This year, we commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Nassau Accord, a pivotal moment in 1985 when The Bahamas took centre stage in the fight against apartheid. As I wrote in my Op-Ed for The Tribune: “The Nassau CHOGM and the work of the EPG remain among the most consequential diplomatic efforts in Commonwealth history. They demonstrated how a small island nation, guided by principle, can shape global discourse.” Forty years later, that bond is stronger than ever. Thank you to the People of The Bahamas for your continued friendship.

Today, I reflect with gratitude on the grace of God, who sustains us through every valley and every mountaintop. Throughout my life, He has been my rock and my salvation, and today I joyfully celebrate the birth of my Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Merry Christ-Mas!

Today I walked around the beautiful gardens of the magnificent Union Buildings, the official seat of our government in Pretoria. Fun fact: It is widely stated that Pretoria hosts the second-largest number of foreign embassies and high commissions in the world, after Washington, DC.
