As many of you know Rascal has a penchant for the dramatic. So here we find him in 18th century regalia surrounded by a bunch of extras (not sure who is paying for their time) celebrating one of his and ours favorite founding fathers (of whom I am proudly related).
251 years ago, today, on March 23rd 1775, the venerable Patrick Henry gave his famous off the cuff no notes and from his patriotic heart speech, "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!"

Holy shit, do you know how much food that is? Just food alone, for the average 6-7 month deployment is about 3 million meals they have to pack aboard.
And it’s not just the carrier that has to undergo all this upkeep, it’s every ship in the strike group. The sheer logistics are mind boggling. Now you’re not just talking aircraft munitions, you’re talking about tomahawks, interceptors, torpedoes, heavy guns… you’re talking about retrofitting a fleet of ships and a small Air Force.
Don’t forget about all those planes, they all need individual upkeep as well.
You’re surprised it takes 12-18 months? I’m surprised they can do it that fast. And that’s just 1 of 11 carrier strike groups we have in operation.
There isn’t a single other nation on the planet that could maintain and redeploy a fleet that size in such a short time period, and that’s before the fire.

I brought my car in for an oil change, it was out of commission for half an hour. It was fully operational when I drove it in. It was not hit by any missiles or drones.
Now, extend that out to a vessel the size of a skyscraper. The HVAC system needs upkeep, the comms system is due for an upgrade, ammunition needs restocked, food to feed 4,700 personnel needs to be restocked, 4,700 sailors need to undergo routine training, the hull needs to be cleaned, hydrologic launch systems need to be checked and repaired, computers need upgraded, elevators that lift fucking fighter jets need lubricant and upkeep, a goddamn nuclear reactor has to be certified to go back out to sea…
You’re talking about outfitting a small city to be completely independent for months at a time on the ocean, it takes time between deployments. And yeah, they probably have to dismantle a section of the ship to remove the fire-damaged dryer and replace it because naval ships don’t have the sort of room to move an industrial sized dryer in and out. Think about trying to remove something the size of an elephant in a place where the halls are little wider than your shoulders.
If she were hit, as you suggest, there’d be no hiding it. You’re talking about nearly 5,000 sailors expected to keep their mouth shut? Not one doing an anonymous leak to the press? It’d never happen. And that’s just the sailors on the Gerald Ford, never mind all the ones on the various escort ships who damn well would know if she were hit.
