@RScared2 @MiddleAgedBaby2 Yes! That's the movie. With @MatthewModine bringing it as Louden Swain. Just watched it this spring after a strong recommend from MAB. Sometimes older coming of age style movies don't seem to hold up super well (IMO). But it was really good. Strong Recommend.

@BloatMcQueen @MiddleAgedBaby2 From a psychological aspect - it's the desire to be part of a universal experience "This universally loved epic - don't you want to be a part of it too?" Turn it negative, and then you see the marketing for Ghostbusters 16 "You don't want to be a part of THAT group, do you?"

I do think people have a sixth sense for that stuff. I had read the hobbit, but not the LOTR when the movies came out. But I fell in love with them immediately. You can just feel the love and passion. And if you stray too far from the themes and spirit of the original, it can unravel pretty quickly because those are the load bearing walls of the story. You can't start tearing some of em down and expect for it to make sense or stand up.

@BloatMcQueen @MiddleAgedBaby2 @heroesahead Another one that fits into that category is Ang Lee's 'Hulk' - as a movie, it's excellent and I would argue it's the most comic book movie in how it's presented and framed. But as a summer blockbuster... not so much

I've kind of come around to this same description of The Last Jedi. @heroesahead kind of won me over on this too. It's the only film of the sequel trilogy that's actually trying to say something. It's also gorgeous. In a lot of ways, it's more Lucasy, and trying to actually be creative and do new things. I just happen to hate all the things it's doing and the themes it decides to land on.

@BloatMcQueen @MiddleAgedBaby2 Exactly - which partially changes the heroes journey of the entire story. He boasted to the Cyclops who he really was and it was that hubris to the Gods that led to him being blown off course

@RScared2 @MiddleAgedBaby2 Because here is where my distance from reading the source material comes into play. Was he ever guilty of the trojan horse maneuver? Wasn't it the Cyclops encounter that actually got him in trouble?

@BloatMcQueen @MiddleAgedBaby2 That was the thing though, the movies have the soul of the work - unlike the Amazon show. Fun story, I did a little work on the Peanuts movie. When I heard it was going to be CG, I thought it was going to be a disaster, but the story retained the soul of the comic - so it worked

And the movies weren't 100% faithful to the books. Because they movies and still need to do movie things. So the phrase I typically throw around is "are they faithful to the spirit of the original work?" And it does seem like that is a bit of an open question in the Odyssey. With some people on the right thinking it is, with others not thinking so. I'll be seeing it tomorrow, so guess I'll have a bit more to say then.

@BloatMcQueen @MiddleAgedBaby2 extremely well made and put together. As a Star Wars movie, it did the same thing that 'The Timeless Children' did to Doctor Who - it fundamentally broke the franchise in a way that the core story can likely never recover from

@BloatMcQueen @MiddleAgedBaby2 I will say this - It is an excellent Nolan movie (warning, the first 45 minutes are a slog...). It is epic, well told and well acted and will get a best picture nomination. As an adaptation, it's shit I make the same distinction with the Last Jedi - as a movie it's....
