Right. After a midnight finish at the stadium, I decided to sleep on this... What a game, first and foremost. Reds better than last week, get a reminder of why you need to play out games. Brumbies will be stinging for not closing an 11pt lead, and with a tough fortnight ahead. And yes, there was a clear knock-on at the end. And yes, mistakes happen. But the question of how it was missed remains valid... #SuperRugbyPacific

This is utterly shameful. Complete disregard for international law. When someone shows you who they really are, believe them.
Anthony Albanese@AlboMP

Australia stands with the brave people of Iran in their struggle against oppression. For decades, the Iranian regime has been a destabilising force, through its ballistic missile and nuclear programs, support for armed proxies, and brutal acts of violence and intimidation. Iran directed at least two attacks on Australian soil in 2024. These appalling acts targeting Australia’s Jewish community were intended to create fear, divide our society and challenge our sovereignty. In response, Australia took the unprecedented steps of expelling Iran’s Ambassador, suspending operations at our embassy in Tehran, and listing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a state sponsor of terrorism. Our Government has sanctioned more than 200 Iranian-linked individuals, including more than 100 linked to the IRGC. With international partners, including the United States and the G7, we have called for the Iranian regime to uphold the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Iran’s citizens. These calls have gone unheeded. Instead, the regime has instigated a brutal crackdown on its own people leaving thousands of Iranian civilians dead. A regime that relies on the repression and murder of its own people to retain power is without legitimacy. It has long been recognised that Iran’s nuclear program is a threat to global peace and security. The international community has been clear that the Iranian regime can never beallowed to develop a nuclear weapon. The United Nations Security Council has reimposed sanctions on Iran for failing to comply with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and the International Atomic Energy Agency Board has formally declared Iran in non-compliance with its non-proliferation safeguards obligations. We support the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent Iran continuing to threaten international peace and security. Australian officials are closely monitoring this evolving situation. We continue to advise Australians do not travel to Iran and leave Iran as soon as possible, if it is safe to do so. Our ability to provide consular assistance in Iran is extremely limited. Given our concerns around security in the region, we have also upgraded Australia’s travel advice for Israel and Lebanon to Do Not Travel. Australians should leave now if it is safe to do so. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has activated its Crisis Centre to provide consular support to Australians in the region. Australians requiring urgent consular assistance can contact the Consular Emergency Centre 24/7 on 1300 555 135 in Australia or +61 2 6261 3305 from outside Australia.

I’m disgusted by this drivel. Israel and the and the US are clearly the aggressors, with zero justification, bombing the Iranian people, so the racist genocidal Israel regime can keep expanding. The hypocrisy of “Australia stands with the brave people of Iran..” is staggering.

The attacks on Iran by Israel and the United States are illegal, unprovoked and unjustifiable. Peace and diplomacy was possible. Instead, Israel and the United States chose war. This is the behaviour of rogue states — and they have jeopardised the safety of humankind around the world with this catastrophic act of aggression. Our government must condemn this flagrant breach of international law, and urgently pursue a foreign policy based on justice, sovereignty and peace.

Australia’s support of Trump and Netanyahu’s illegal attack is disgraceful. We cannot bomb our way to peace. The Albanese Labor government must immediately rule out any Australian support for this escalation: no resources and no intelligence.

Who believed that "if they only released the hostages"? Who believed in the ceasefire? After killing 500+ people in about 3 months, Israel- armed and supported by the US - continues its genocide in Gaza undisturbed. Don't let it become the new normal. Stand up against genocide!

The idea that being “indigenous” automatically grants moral ownership of land collapses the moment you look at actual human history and apply a consistent moral standard to it. Long before Europeans arrived, Native American tribes fought, displaced, absorbed, and sometimes wiped out other tribes. The Iroquois Confederacy expanded by crushing rivals. The Aztec Empire grew through conquest, coercion, and tribute. Entire peoples vanished not because of outsiders, but because stronger neighbors took their land. This was not an exception. It was the rule. Morality cannot selectively ignore facts. If land was already changing hands through violence and domination, then “who was there first” cannot logically create an eternal moral claim. A past act of conquest does not become morally sacred simply because enough time has passed. This is not a uniquely American story. It is the story of Homo sapiens everywhere. Humans migrate, compete, conquer, assimilate, and redraw borders. Always have. Always will. No population on earth holds land because history peacefully granted it moral title. Land is held because, at some point, power determined the outcome. Modern moral legitimacy therefore cannot come from ancestry alone. It comes from present responsibility. From how societies govern today, how rights are protected today, and how power is exercised now. Morality applies to living systems, not frozen historical snapshots chosen for political convenience. “Indigenous” is not a scientific or ethical category. It is a political one. It freezes history at a convenient moment and declares that everything before that moment does not count. Who decides that moment? Whoever benefits from it. If you rewind history far enough, every group was once indigenous. If you stop history early enough, every conqueror can reinvent themselves as a victim. Moral arguments about land that ignore this reality are not about justice. They are about power, timing, and narrative control.

I neither speak nor understand Arabic. I suspect @ChrisMinnsMP is in the same boat. When the rallies began, I wanted to understand precisely what intifada meant because it was being chanted. Was it an incitement? And an incitement to what exactly? Most of us became familiar with the word at the onset of the first Intefada which involved widespread civil disobedience. The 2nd Intefada was more violent - it involved suicide bombings. It was fascinating to discover its actual meaning, in particular because of the widespread use of the metaphor across many languages and cultures as an inspiration for liberation: a shaking off of a yoke, a rising up against oppression. That resilience in the indomitable human quest for freedom from oppression. The phenomenon is lionised in poetry, song and prose commemorating liberation across cultures that have had to shed oppression, and I hope a linguist out there is writing a paper on equivalent expressions in our indigenous languages that will capture for the sake of history and future generations of indigenous Australians, their ancestors’ struggle against the invasion of their world. Is it by definition a violent ‘armed’ uprising? The answer is no, and ‘Globalise the Intefada’ is used by Palestinian activists to inspire what has indeed already happened - the world’s people have understood the necessity and urgency to speak up about liberation of the Palestinian people, they have indeed ‘risen up’ to demand their governments take meaningful action to stop the genocide, the ethnic cleansing, the occupation, the land theft, the oppression, the starvation, the killing of journalists, doctors, first responders, the targeted shooting of children, to impose sanctions on Israel, to stop supplying weaponry to Israel, to stop funding the genocide by buying arms and technology battle-tested on the Palestinian population. They have continued to rally every Sunday for 2 years, to ask for these things. The Intefada is indeed globalised. And the purpose is to stop this global Intefada. They can ban every word in the Arabic language, but until they comprehend and address the root cause of terrorism, we are not resolving what has put us all at risk, and, due to the genocide conducted by Israel while purporting to represent all Jews, Jewish people in particular. Whilst the root cause is not dealt with, we will live in fear. In trying to crush a broad based movement’s will to ‘rise up’ and oppose oppression @ChrisMinns is prepared to trash Australians’ democratic right to political expression, all for the sake of not addressing the root cause of terrorism and appeasing the Zionist Lobby. Does anyone, anyone at all, genuinely believe peaceful anti genocide rallies have caused the terrorist attack. I doubt it. On the other hand, is this oppression likely to increase both antisemitism and contempt of our political leadership. We’re heading into a new year and dangerous uncharted territory.
Shane Bazzi@shanebazzi

Excellent question from @FaridYFarid to @ChrisMinnsMP, asking him to explain the word intifada and why he is banning an Arabic word while at the same time saying that he doesn’t want to whip up fear and racism.
