Canada Day feels different for me this year. I grew up believing Canada was a country of opportunity, fairness, freedom, and shared prosperity. But for many Albertans, that Canada feels increasingly distant. Alberta’s future no longer fits inside the country Canada has become.

The mayors of Alberta’s two largest cities are standing up for Canada, and it deserves to be recognized. Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack called out the UCP’s “separatist agenda” directly, warning it’s creating “severe economic uncertainty” that will kill investment and cost jobs. His words: “Moving forward with a referendum to do another referendum does nothing to help, and wastes our money. It is a distraction from the issues facing everyday Albertans.”  Knack says he’s already getting calls from the business community asking whether they should still invest in Edmonton. “It harms our ability to attract economic investment, which in turn affects municipalities’ financial sustainability, which in turn affects people’s property taxes.”  Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas went further, calling the referendum push a sign of weak leadership from Premier Smith’s government, and warning that the uncertainty alone is enough to deter investment and damage Calgary’s economy.  These are the mayors of the cities that would bear the greatest economic cost of separation. They’re not fringe voices. They’re the people responsible for keeping businesses open, keeping workers employed, and keeping taxes manageable for ordinary Albertans. This isn’t Ottawa talking. This isn’t central Canada fear-mongering. This is Edmonton and Calgary saying: enough. Vote no in October.

Court records state he hurled racial slurs during the ride and punched the driver in the face through the open window. He received a conditional discharge. Breaches of court orders (related to the above cases). Charges that were stayed (not resulting in convictions): 2003: Two counts of domestic assault against his then-girlfriend Tara Hart (allegations included throwing her across a room). Other mentions: A 2004 conditional discharge for an assault in Ontario (fight) a 2006 charge for stealing a money order. Danielle Smith (Alberta Premier): No criminal convictions. Wants what is best for Albertans.

Premier and UCP are in a pickle. The mask fell off. It’s now undeniable that the UCP pre-determined the outcome of the committee vote, rigged the process and intend to announce it in tomorrow’s TV address. They will likely hold a mock committee vote to paper over the sham.
