He’s confused about the nature of the new, hyper-charged anti-Israel sentiment on the left. It has nothing to do with policy or the Middle East or rebuilding Gaza or the Iran war. His father, Mendy Katz, shared the heartbreaking news, writing: “With unspeakable tragedy I regret to inform you that my 22 year old son Moshe Yitzchak a*h a sergeant in the idf, fell in battle in Lebanon.” He described his son as “my oldest son with a zest for life and jokes,” adding, “My heart is shattered and the wound is real. May he be a malitz yosher for only good things.” The levaya is expected to take place in Eretz Yisroel.

Politico has removed an offensive cartoon that featured Donald Trump, Benjamin Netanyahu, and an assortment of American conservative politicians wearing Jewish prayer shawls covered in blood. The bloody bag of money on top really just ties it together as a disgusting, antisemitic mess of a drawing. But removing the cartoon means that someone looked at this and thought it was totally acceptable to post. Only afterwards did someone with a brain point out how terrible this is. This is the world we live in now, either completely ignorant of antisemitism to the point that people can't recognize it when it's right in front of their faces, or completely fine with it unless they get pushback. Either way, the damage was done.

Sometimes things hit closer to home than you had expected. 22-year-old Sargent Moshe Yitzchak Katz, son of a dear friend of mine and a treasured member of the New Haven Jewish community has been killed by Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon. Antizionism isn’t a sophisticated critique of policy. It is the only “political idea” in the world whose practical demand is that one – and only one – people should not have a nation-state. You can call yourself anti-capitalist without wanting to dismantle France. You can criticise British or American policy without arguing the UK or US must cease to exist. But “antizionism” insists that Jewish collective self‑determination, alone, is illegitimate – in a century shaped by Jewish statelessness, persecution, and genocide. That is not “anti‑racism”. It is the recycling of a very old story: Jews may live anywhere, so long as it is at the sufferance of others, with no sovereign protection of their own.
