@KristinAndrewz Consciousness is likely continuous, not binary. Everything from phospholipids to humans falls on the spectrum. But the idea of "shifting the Null" breaks the fundamental logic behind the Null in science; you can't prove a negative. We can shift the prior but not the Null.

Falling behind: postdocs in their thirties tire of putting life on hold. Read the results of Nature’s second global survey of postdoctoral researchers go.nature.com/3Qtd4hI

Paper on state-switching step selection functions (HMM-SSFs) published in Movement Ecology (rdcu.be/ddHru)! We model behaviour-dependent movement and habitat selection, with some new extensions and inferential tools. Applied to 🦓. With @len_thom and @TheoMichelot

@AEDerocher @birdsoftheworld Bonus is that observations go into @Team_eBird database and is used by scientists to study species distributions. For some rare species, citizen science can provide more valuable data than systematic surveys.

I confess to being a lazy birder so the ⁦@birdsoftheworld⁩ app is a game changer. I bought bird song CDs decades ago but never mastered them. Today’s exploring was greatly aided by the app: I knew some participants but not all. Highly recommended!

Very excited to publish the last chapter of my PhD on #polarbear #BehaviourEcology using #HMMs. Bears seem to change their behaviour and foraging strategy with the daily and seasonal cycles of their seal prey. #newpaper #movementecoolgy doi.org/10.1186/s40462…

New polar bear paper with @RTogunov, @AugerMethe & @environmentca explores foraging behavior: "bears spent approximately 47% of their time in the stationary drift state, 29% in olfactory search, and 24% in area‐restricted search." Open access: trebuchet.public.springernature.app/get_content/3c…

@jeffwhigdon Arctic food chains are hard... PBI's food chain has algae consumed by diatoms (photosynthetic algae).

My friend Sarah sent me this terrible #foodchain diagram and ruined my day, so now y'all have to see it too. #Arctic #Antarctic
