Srinagar streets display visible prosperity at every turn. Tile-covered mansions line localities, their gates gleaming, cars parked outside like trophies. Gold glitters at weddings, smartphones fill every pocket, and designer clothes mark every occasion. But behind these polished doors, another reality sits at dinner tables.  Parents count cash for school fees while youth worry about jobs and tomorrow. Families fear one medical emergency, one closed road, one bad season that stops the cash.  Read More: kashmirobserver.net/2026/04/09/why…

Samay Raina says you should only “fight when it’s fair”, in a way suggesting that Kashmiri Pandits were outnumbered as if the entire Kashmiri Muslim community was up in arms against them. But what he conveniently hides are these facts that dismantle that argument entirely: 1) Long before the exodus happened, the princely state of J&K had already acceded to India, and under Article 370, the defence of the territory was the domain of the Union’s security apparatus, not unarmed Kashmiri civilians. Preventing infiltration was the Union's job, not of the people. 2) By 1990, India had already fought three wars with Pakistan: 1947, 1965, 1971. This wasn’t an untested or unprepared state. Kashmir was already heavily securitised. Army, BSF, CAPFs, JKP - a layered security presence. 3) Yet the Union & State failed to provide security in the heart of the Valley, not along the borders. Pandits largely inhabited towns and city centres, not inaccessible mountain tops or no man's lands. 4) The same State that could mobilise buses overnight to move Pandits out could not mobilise its own forces to restore order. An entire administrative and security apparatus stood functional enough to facilitate exit, but not to confront a militant presence that was, at the time, in the hundreds. 5) What followed was not resolution but escalation, including the large-scale killing of Kashmiri Muslims, with figures often cited around 40,000 - 1 Lakh, even as per some official accounts. 6) It’s easier to point fingers at helpless Muslim civilians, there’s no cost to that. But if he and his ilk truly care about what happened in 1990, they should find the courage to ask these questions of those in charge at the time and hold them accountable for failing to secure both the borders and the people of this state, Pandits, Muslims and Sikhs alike.

Those going Gaga over a comedians sermons do read. History never offered the oppressed a “fair fight.” From Warsaw’s Jewish resistance to Algeria vs France, from Vietnam vs the US to apartheid South Africa even Afghanistan and Iran today numbers never decided courage. In India too, resistance was never about parity. The Maratha resistance against the Mughal Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Sikh resistance against Mughal rule led by Guru Gobind Singh, and the Indian Rebellion of 1857 against the British East India Company none waited for a “fair fight.” Strength was never about population. It’s about memory, identity, and love for one’s land. When someone says “fight only when it’s fair,” it sounds less like history and more like personal survival dressed up as wisdom. Maybe instead of quoting George Orwell, a little reading on resistance would help. Credit where it’s due he has built his space in stand-up. But sermons on history and struggle? That’s not his field. Stick to Gen Z comedy. Because if those who resisted from the Marathas to the Sikhs, from 1857 to countless unnamed struggles had subscribed to this thinking, India and its civilizational spine would have long been wiped out. This isn’t a community’s history speaking. It sounds more like individual fear finding a voice. @rainarajesh

This conversation between an Israeli nationalist and an Afghan nationalist, both of whom share a visceral hatred for Pakistan, takes unexpected turns. Secularism nationalisms intertwines with Abrahmic faiths and legends of the lost tribes.
