On World Press Freedom Day, the nation must confront a stark and undeniable reality. Since 2014, India’s position in the World Press Freedom Index has steadily declined, falling to 157th place, under the BJP regime. A free press, in its truest sense, does not exist to amplify the government’s narrative or conceal its failures. It exists to question authority, to scrutinise power, and to hold those in office accountable. The media preserves the Democratic balance between power and the people. Journalists are the custodians of public truth. As Pandit Nehru had said, “The freedom of the Press is not just a slogan but an essential attribute of the democratic process.” That essential attribute stands gravely compromised under the present regime.   The Sangh Parivar has increasingly weaponised legal frameworks to silence newsrooms. Defamation laws, national security provisions, and sweeping criminal statutes are deployed not as instruments of justice, but as tools of intimidation. Between 2014 and 2020, over 135 journalists were arrested, detained, or interrogated. Between 2014 and 2023, 36 journalists were imprisoned. The scale of persecution has risen sharply, with several journalists booked under draconian laws such as the UAPA.   At the same time, a far more disturbing pattern has emerged, one of violence and impunity. Journalists are being murdered in BJP-ruled states for doing their job. Raghvendra Bajpai in Uttar Pradesh, Mukesh Chandrakar in Chhattisgarh, Rajeev Pratap Singh in Uttarakhand, and Dharmendra Singh Chauhan in Haryana, each of them was reporting on corruption and issues of public interest. Today, they stand as grim reminders of the cost of speaking truth to power. Not satisfied with its existing control, the BJP-RSS government, in its quest for total dominance, is now seeking to tighten its stranglehold over social media in an attempt to silence it.   The message of the BJP-RSS is clear: independent journalism will be punished, and compliance will be rewarded. Sections of the media have been reduced to echoing the ruling establishment, while those who persist in asking questions are targeted relentlessly. As we observe, World Press Freedom Day, it is time for deep introspection by all stakeholders. Most importantly, those in power must always uphold the long-established norms of Democracy. Any deviation from these principles, if allowed to persist over time, risks becoming normalised and even accepted, causing lasting damage to democratic norms, values, institutions, and the people they serve. The government of the day must, therefore, hold itself to the highest possible standards.

As the Indian National Trade Union Congress marks 79 years, I extend heartfelt gratitude to its countless members who have tirelessly fought for labour rights. Inspired by leaders like Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jagjivan Ram, Aruna Asaf Ali, Gulzari Lal Nanda and others, INTUC has stood for the dignity of workers, rooted in Gandhian values. On this foundation day, we must renew our resolve to address emerging challenges, ensuring social security for the unorganised sector, gig and platform workers, khet-mazdoors, artisans and casual labour - advancing the cause of social justice.

कांग्रेस की वरिष्ठ नेता और सांसद गेनीबेन ठाकोर जी पर गुजरात भाजपा अध्यक्ष की अभद्र टिप्पणी बेहद शर्मनाक और अपमानजनक है। एक तरफ भाजपा सरकार संसद में भी महिलाओं पर अनर्गल आरोप लगाकर अपमानित करती है, दूसरी तरफ उनके नेता अभद्र टिप्पणी करके महिलाओं को अपमानित करते हैं। भाजपा हमेशा ऐसे लोगों को संरक्षण देती है। महिला-विरोधी भाजपा के सियासी “नारी वंदन” की यही असलियत है। @GenibenThakor, आपके संघर्ष को मैं जानती हूँ और आपके साथ खड़ी हूँ। आपकी हिम्मत पर हम सब को गर्व है।

गुजरात के भाजपा अध्यक्ष ने कांग्रेस की हमारी महिला सांसद गेनीबेन ठाकोर जी पर अभद्र टिप्पणी की है। “नारी वंदन” का मुखौटा उतर गया। यह सिर्फ़ शर्मनाक नहीं - यह BJP की मनुवादी, महिला-विरोधी विचारधारा का असली चेहरा है। ये है BJP का “नारी वंदन”? ये करेंगे महिलाओं का सशक्तिकरण? ये देंगे अधिकार? सत्ता को चुनौती देने वाली महिलाएं इन्हें बर्दाश्त नहीं - एक ही पल में इनकी विकृत मानसिकता सामने आ जाती है। और प्रधानमंत्री तो, कांग्रेस की महिला सांसदों के सवालों से घबराकर, संसद छोड़कर पहले ही भाग चुके हैं। मोदी जी ख़ुद कहते हैं, “नारी सब भूल जाती है, लेकिन अपना अपमान कभी नहीं भूलती।” - मगर BJP खुद ये भूल गई। महिला-विरोधी BJP ये याद रखे - गुजरात के साथ पूरे हिंदुस्तान की महिलाएं हर अपमान का मुंहतोड़ जवाब देंगी।

उत्तर प्रदेश कांग्रेस कमेटी के अध्यक्ष अजय राय जी के अस्वस्थ होने के समाचार से चिंतित हूं। उनके शीघ्र स्वास्थ्य लाभ की कामना करता हूं। आशा है कि वो जल्द से जल्द स्वस्थ हों और फिर से पूरी शक्ति के साथ जन सेवा में सक्रिय हों।

Just as the election cycle concluded, the Modi government wasted no time to increase prices of LPG cylinders. A whopping increase of nearly ₹1000 on commercial cylinders will affect crores of Indians who rely on food from small eateries for sustenance. Similarly, crores of small food businesses will have to bear the burden of this hike. The BJP’s regard for the common Indian’s suffering is limited to election gimmicks, after which they’re left to their own devices. In the 3 months since the Iran war began, the government should have prepared a solid plan to shield ordinary Indians from the price shocks, instead of passing on the financial burden.

भारत में आज बेरोजगारी ‘हम दो- हमारे दो’ नीतियों का सीधा परिणाम है। 1. मोदी सरकार ने ‘हम दो हमारे दो’ नीति की वजह से कामगार-विरोधी Labour Code को लागू किया। इसकी वजह से नोएडा हो, पानीपत का IOCL हो, रायखेड़ा में अदाणी की फैक्ट्री, या NTPC पतरातू हो या फिर श्रीपेरंबदूर में samsung की फैक्ट्री हो- हर जगह unrest हुआ है। यह Code नौकरी की सुरक्षा के बजाय Contract Labour और Hire & Fire जैसी नीतियों को बढ़ावा देती हैं। इसलिए नए Labour Code को review किया जाए। 2. मोदी सरकार ने जबरदस्ती संसद में कानून पारित कर मनरेगा को समाप्त कर दिया है। मोदी जी ने मजदूरी के खर्च का 40% बोझ राज्य सरकारों पर डाल दिया है। राज्य सरकारें यह खर्च नहीं उठा सकती हैं और अंततः काम देना बंद कर देंगी। 3. मोदी सरकार ने कामगारों को मजबूरन बेरोजगारी और Gig Work की ओर धकेल दिया है।69% लोग न्यूनतम मजदूरी से कम पर काम कर रहे हैं । 4. मोदी सरकार ने Stagnant Wages का संकट पैदा कर दिया है। महंगाई को अगर ध्यान में रखे तो पिछले एक दशक में (2014-15 से 2022-23) भारत के अधिकांश श्रमिकों की मजदूरीमें सालाना 1 % से कम की वृद्धि हुई है। 5. मोदी सरकार ने पढ़े-लिखे लोगों- Graduates में बड़े पैमाने पर बेरोजगारी का संकट पैदा कर दिया है। PSU बेचकर नौकरियाँ खत्म कर दी गई।लगभग 30 लाख सरकारी रिक्त पदों को भरने से इनकार किया है। सरकार की गलतियों की वजह से MSMEs ख़त्म हो गए। कांग्रेस पार्टी की भारत के कामगारों के लिए 5 मांगे दोहराती है — 1. मनरेगा को फिर से शुरू किया जाए और शहरी इलाकों में इसका विस्तार हो 2. राष्ट्रीय न्यूनतम मजदूरी 400 रुपये प्रतिदिन, जिसमें मनरेगा भी शामिल किया जाए 3. ‘Right To Health’ कानून- मजदूरों - कामगारों के लिए 25 लाख रुपये तक का Universal Health Coverage 4. सभी असंगठित श्रमिकों के लिए ‘जीवन बीमा और दुर्घटना बीमा’ हो 5. सरकार के मुख्य कार्यों में रोजगार के ठेकेदारीकरण को रोकना और नए Labour Code को review किया जाए। #LabourDay

कह दिया था - चुनाव के बाद महंगाई की गर्मी आएगी। आज कमर्शियल गैस सिलेंडर ₹993 महंगा। एक ही दिन में सबसे बड़ी बढ़ोतरी। यह चुनावी बिल है। फरवरी से अब तक: ₹1,380 की बढ़ोतरी - सिर्फ़ 3 महीनों में 81% का इज़ाफ़ा। चायवाला, ढाबा, होटल, बेकरी, हलवाई - हर किसी की रसोई पर बोझ बढ़ा। और इसका असर आपकी थाली पर भी पड़ेगा। पहला वार गैस पर, अगला वार पेट्रोल-डीज़ल पर।
