At a time when Prime Minister Modi is asking citizens to reduce LPG consumption, avoid buying gold, and limit household spending in the name of austerity. The BJP government is now using its own lack of preparedness and planning as justification for postponing governance itself. Governance is not a responsibility reserved for good times. The Union Education Minister dismissing the recommendations of a bipartisan parliamentary standing committee merely because it includes opposition members is disgraceful, arrogant, and deeply corrosive to parliamentary democracy. Committees of Parliament are not party platforms; they are constitutional instruments of scrutiny, accountability, and institutional correction. Since the very first cabinet of independent India, parliamentary committees have functioned through consensus, evidence-based deliberation, and cross-party participation. Governments of every political persuasion have relied on these committees to strengthen legislation, improve governance, and identify systemic failures. To delegitimise a committee because dissenting voices are present is to undermine the very architecture of parliamentary oversight. The Education Standing Committee’s observations on the NTA were not partisan slogans but documented concerns arising from repeated examination failures, postponements, paper leaks, and administrative breakdowns affecting lakhs of students. Notably, members from the ruling party itself are part of the same committee. Rejecting its findings amounts to rejecting Parliament’s collective institutional wisdom itself. At a time when students and parents across India are anxious about the credibility of national examinations, the minister should have demonstrated humility and accountability instead of political hostility.
