A5. A good thyroid ultrasound with an experienced radiologist or technician is good for monitoring, especially for lymph nodes. Thyroglobulin is a great blood marker, though sometimes thyroid cancers stop producing it. #AHNSchat

@ThyCaInc A4 I had two surgeries and two rounds of radioactive iodine. The hardest part for me was the isolation. I became very depressed and started having panic attacks. I know the experience is different for everyone. #AHNSchat

@ThyCaInc A2: Everyone's skin heal differently, in my case it took more than 2-3 years for the scar to go sort of "invisible". Part of it was reddish and thick for a long time. I used those silicone scar strips for a while...and...a high SPF sunscreen, lots of sunscreen! 😅 #AHNSchat.

A1. Welcome Karen! Which nerves seemed affected (voice, skin?). And how did your temp fluctuate? Was it affected by the amount of medication you were taking? #AHNSchat
Karen@harleysmom2015

@ThyCaInc Q1 #ahnschat I wish I would have known about the nerve damage and issues with temperature fluctuation.

@allenhomd A1. I'm 12+ years out, and I still can't wear a crew neck shirt without discomfort or a choking feeling. Many others have said they have the same sensation. #AHNSchat

A1. One small but common issue is that pts don't expect as much of a sore throat - it lasts only 1-2 days, but they are less expecting it. They are more prepped for the more publicized risks of hoarseness, hypoparathyroidism, etc. #AHNSchat

A4. For the cases that hemithyroidectomy is an option, shared decision making between surgeon, endocrinologist, and patient is so important #AHNSchat

#AHNSchat A4. I usually defer the decision re: total or hemithyroidectomy to my brilliant surgery colleagues, although the movement towards more conservative treatment in appropriate low-risk patients has a strong evidence base.
