The most overrated right-back in the world.
For years, we’ve been he is a generational talent. A revolutionary full‑back. A playmaker from deep. An “assist machine.” But peel back the layers, and what do you actually get? A defensively fragile player whose so‑called “world‑class” passing is often masked by systems (defensive) covering for his weaknesses.
He’s a liability. Positionally unaware, easily turned, and consistently exposed in 1v1s. Wingers don't fear him (they target him). Errors/mistakes, the number of goals his teams concede from that is staggering, yet the conversation always shifts to what he does going forward.
Yes, he’s got a highlight reel of Hollywood passes. But how many of those are low‑percentage balls recycled from set‑pieces/switches under no pressure? Put him in a team without a covering centre‑back/a hard‑working midfielder, and the output dries up quickly.
Elite full-backs defend first. Their attacking contributions are a bonus, not a justification for poor defending. Trent’s defending is tolerated because of what he offers going forward, but when that forward output dips, you’re left with a full‑back who can’t do the basics of his position.
So no, Trent isn’t a generational talent. He’s a system player with a world‑class right foot, and a brain that forgets he’s supposed to defend first.
Overrated. Simple as.
