Finally read the Justin Townes Earle biography. An epic read. I bawled at the end.
As much about the gentrification of cities and corporatization of music as it is a history of one of my generation’s greatest voices.
I didn’t think music journalism of this quality still existed

The couple asked "did you throw a (n-word) on there?"
Had no idea what that meant. Asked my father about it later. He didn't explain it other than to bashfully explain it was racist. Still had no idea until a good while later. My parents didn't use it.

I was at a campground "resort" where my birth father sold lifetime memberships and would wander around all day until it was time to go home.
At one campsite an older couple had a bonfire outside their RV and we were feeding it. I commented that the smoke had turned black.

This has made me genuinely curious about something: if you're white, and you didn't grow up in an explicitly racist household, how did you first learn about the n-word? I can't imagine there's a standard procedure for that sort of thing.

Met with the oncologist today and I start chemo next week. Also meeting with the surgeon next week, and it sounds like I’ll have surgery in a few months after my first round of chemo.

I found out yesterday that I have breast cancer but I won’t find out about treatment options for another week or two and this is a very uneasy place to be

ICE is still being awful in Minneapolis. Today they tried to arrest the family of one of my sister's students (here legally). The agents broke their windows. Now they can't be in their apartment, because it's like 0 degrees and their windows are busted.
