Can't think of a better way to read There Is No Antimemetics Division than in the hallucinatory polyphasic sleep state that a newborn entails. I doze near the crib, change the baby, read a few pages, both sleep, wake up unsure if I'm dreaming, read more, etc. Perfect!

It was a pleasure & honour to receive the Lovelace Medal from @bcs alongside Oxford colleague Ian Horrocks & long-term collaborator Nick Jennings (@lboroVC) - an opportunity to reflect on how multi-agent systems emerged & evolved. Summary: I still believe in multi-agent systems!

@tdietterich @savvyRL Isn’t it space x time / attendance = registration cost? And it’s hard to justify attending if you’re not presenting.

@savvyRL Physical meetings are constrained by many things: space, duration, cost, and policies such as having everyone speak. Space x time = registration cost

We are fooling ourselves thinking physical constraints were ever the reason that confs have a low acceptance rate. They are, after all, only “constraints” not incentives. Confs are incentivized to lower their acceptance rate to keep the prestige.
Neil Lawrence@lawrennd

Agree with @wellingmax @yeewhye @ryan_p_adams and others on this. Physical constraints (first volume size, then venue size) drove these arbitrary rates in the past. They are (temporarily?) gone. Accept on interest and quality, not arbitrary targets.

This is an incredible honor for me, especially because so many of the previous recipients -- while the post picks out my face they're all there at the link -- have been such inspirations to me and played such important roles in my career. Hope to live up to it and pay it forward!

I've moved on from OpenAI to work on something new with some colleagues (openai.com/blog/organizat…). I'm also going to be continuing a lot of my work on technology assessment with @indexingai and the @OECD , and am very excited about stuff in the pipeline there!
