@Intoalltruth64 @bmariner What do you mean when you say that it was the deal breaker of the book? You said that you think that it is a good story, right?
English

I'm not sure what you mean by that. For me, that was the deal breaker of the book. The whole premise was impossible. Astrophage can't exist. So the sun couldn't be dying. So they couldn't build a ship to go to another star, etc, etc. the book is touted as hard science fiction. But it has a science fantasy core.

@NerdyNighthawk @ZeducationYT Say what? Ice cream hurts your joints or something?
English

@Rayden_Creed @ZeducationYT I love root beer floats, but i can never have them cuz they mess with my joints too much
English

@lowkeydex Or because there’s information you need but can’t get from the display. I hate self-checkout.
English

@Intoalltruth64 @bmariner That was all understood going in, wasn’t it?
English

The function of it violates known physics, especially because it's portrayed as a biological organism that can:
absorb and store enormous amounts of energy with near-perfect efficiency,
convert energy to usable mass and back on demand,
emit thrust-energy in a highly controlled way,
interact with radiation in ways ordinary matter does not,
and do all this while remaining a tiny, cell-like lifeform.
It's the one convenient cheat in the middle of the plausible science in this book.
English

@Sinewy_AD Looks cool, but I think a different name aside from “Anti-Hylia” would work better

A black fungus feeds on radiation in Chernobyl.
In the radioactive ruins of Chernobyl’s Reactor 4, scientists found an extraordinary black fungus, Cladosporium sphaerospermum, thriving in one of Earth’s most toxic environments.
Rather than merely enduring radiation, this fungus seems to harness it through radiosynthesis—a process akin to photosynthesis but driven by gamma radiation, converting it into chemical energy. It’s among the rare organisms capable of this feat.
Even more remarkable, when tested on the International Space Station, the fungus flourished, forming a biofilm that blocked up to 84% of cosmic radiation, hinting at its potential as a living radiation shield for astronauts. With radiation posing a major hurdle for deep-space missions to Mars and beyond, this self-regenerating biological layer could revolutionize spacecraft design by replacing heavy, bulky shielding.
On Earth, researchers are exploring its use in bioremediation to detoxify radioactive sites too hazardous for humans, potentially transforming nuclear disaster recovery. As one scientist put it, “It’s like nature crafted a biological radiation shield.” From Chernobyl’s ruins to space, this humble fungus could help humanity thrive in the universe’s harshest environments.

@Intoalltruth64 @bmariner I didn’t like the ending very much either. I thought astrophage made sense though. What didn’t make sense about it?
English

@bmariner I listened to Project Hail Mary on Kindle. I thought it was a good story but I didn't like the ending very much. And astrophage just didn't make any sense.
English

@NerdyNighthawk @ZeducationYT Dr. Pepper is pretty good. Root beer too, especially in root beer floats
English

@Rayden_Creed @ZeducationYT Pickles are a gift from Heaven. Same with Dr Pepper
English

@Rayden_Creed @pickover In some instances.
But it reflects a deeper truth, and is far more elegant in other instances.
Which makes it beautiful.
English

@ArcticJackW Really, I should say that Stratt felt copy-pasted. I’ll have to go back through both books at some point to say for sure though
English

@Rayden_Creed Couldn’t disagree more. I still can’t remember the characters names from Martian but everyone stood out uniquely in PHM.
Though, in terms of plot, the Problem/Solution formula gets a little exhausting by the end of each book—I just want something to go right for once!
English

@Rayden_Creed @GodlyAction To be saved is to be redeemed from sin and death through Jesus Christ and brought onto the covenant path He established.
English

@GodlyAction Not required according to whom, because it sure was required by Jesus Christ.
English

@Austin_Medzz Please no. Oh my gosh that would be the stupidest thing ever.
English

@whyarethis @pickover The three-dimensional version of the bell curve can be broken up into circles, which is where the π comes from
English

@pickover What does that mean about the relation between the curve and the circle?
