Ok, a lot to say but all jumbled rn. Biggest bullets: 1. Fantastic movie 2. Not Homer’s Odyssey, Chris Nolan’s, but * a read * on Homer’s 3. Not all the choices worked for me, but none were horrible 4. The moral core is not pagan but Christian, at times almost explicitly so

@AlysssaHazel @DungeonNoir @shapesandlines It's not against anyone with a different opinion. Why it starts with "like it or don't like it I don't mind." It is aimed squarely at those who lambasted a film for being woke for years without seeing it and refuse to update their priors now that it's out and plainly not woke.

I have no problem with disliking what the movie actually is But calling the movie woke is wholly unsupported by the actual content of the film There are no good faith paths to deciding it's woke. @AaronJay954127 @SpencerKlavan @TheFP It's just as justified as in the poem in the sense that they're sniveling little thieves that were trying to steal his shit and ruin his family. It's not manufactured in the sense that HE is still KILLING them without any hesitation or self defense pretext.

One of my favorite things about Nolan’s Odyssey was his treatment of the suitors. As I write in @TheFP: They’re weaselly sleazebags, Nolan portrays them as such, and he makes us glad to see them get killed. I think we should be. Some modern interpreters like to wring their hands about this part of the poem, and it’s certainly possible to raise hard questions in the grey areas. But it’s also possible to go way too far in entertaining sympathy for these murderous thieves and their accomplices. The main point of the thing is: these are not good guys, they are the bad guys, preying on the weak, and there would be nothing compassionate about letting them get away with it. Nolan gets that basic idea across very effectively. I suspect this may be my most controversial take about the movie—some will have wanted Nolan to go harder on the brutality of the poem, and think I’m letting Nolan off the hook for softening the harshness of the ancient warrior code to suit modern audiences. Others will think I’m being monstrously insensitive and reading Homer too simplistically, that we and Nolan *ought* to be disgusted with Odysseus and Telemachus here. But I maintain that, though one can argue over nuances, the real essence of the thing isn’t all that complicated: the good guys win, the bad guys lose. It’s storytelling that connects with our basic sense of justice, which is actually more profound than seminar-room waffling and moral equivocation. The Odyssey discourse perfectly encapsulates why the right is doomed. Every right-wing chud bitched about it for months then went to see it anyway. Some are even coping that it’s secretly based. Meanwhile if Nolan had made White Wakanda he’d be seeking asylum in North Korea rn.

This is the critique I agree with most, it is a massive change. But I think giving your protagonist a character arc is a fine decision to make when making a Hollywood blockbuster. A MUCH clumsier version of this has been forced onto Heracles and Jason a thousand times before.
