I’m at war with STUFF. Clutter. Crap. Stupid Amazon boxes and pointless plastic $4.99-on-sale-impulse-buy-TjMax shit that just takes up space. The wasted energy kills me. A factory of workers in china makes this stuff. A boat takes it to America. Then vans drive my 2 AA batteries in a shoebox size box full of plastic. Then I have to pay extra because my stupid dumpster is too full. And the addiction and reliance of dumb stuff. Sh*t, this fancy coffee maker I barely use needs special cleaning stuff that I don’t have. What a bummer. Gotta acquire more stuff. We mindlessly buy this pointless stuff. Then buy more stuff to store our stuff. Then a bigger house to make space for more stuff. And you can’t have an empty house, so get more stuff!!! Our stuff starts owning us. I wanna own my stuff, not the other way around. My strategies for my war on stuff: 1. Buy for life: this isn’t about money. I like spending on stuff that really makes me happy. And when I want stuff, I want the best stuff. But I want stuff to last for a long time. I try to buy stuff that can last decades, can be fixed, and sometimes, gets better with age. A sick leather jacket that patinas nicely and is worth fixing if I rip it. Stuff that isn’t plastic. Durable USB cords. Whatever. Even if it’s 10x more than the cheap stuff. 2. Reduce, reuse. Forget recycling. It all gets thrown away. That blue bin stuff is a myth. Glass, metal, ceramic. I try to buy stuff that I can reuse, repurposed. 3. Intentionality. Will this stuff I wanna buy make me happy or clutter my life? Sometimes, it does give me joy! I love my fancy computer monitor or ice cream maker. Will I use this pineapple cutter? No, I eat pineapple like once a year. A knife will suffice. All my old grey hair friends say I will love this war on stuff. With a family they say YOU MEED MORE STUFF! But I’m going down fighting. Ok. Rant over. Gotta go break down a bunch of dumb Amazon boxes.

I have never had heroes, except for Charlie Munger. Today I learned that the man who was my longtime friend, mentor, and supporter passed yesterday at 99 years and 11 months. Although he missed the century-old mark by only a few days, I don't think it would have mattered to him at all. Charlie didn't care about such designations. He only cared about finding ways to generate positive outcomes--and, crucially, not just for himself. He wanted everyone he could reach to benefit, too. Charlie was a capitalist to the bone. But, he advocated a rarified form: selfless capitalism. Two sentiments I heard him express make the case. In describing the importance of acquired wealth, he said it was, "to be in a position to help others when trouble comes." So, it wasn't to protect oneself from tribulation; it was to rescue the less well-positioned from it. Even more impressive to me was a statement he made on the moral responsibility of highly successful businesspeople to share fully their methods for producing that success--something he and Warren Buffett do relentlessly at Berkshire Hathaway. "Amazing," I remember saying to myself when I heard his claim. Here's a man at remarkably elevated levels of business attainment who, rather than secreting his causal practices and strategies, recommends revealing them widely to spread and thereby enlarge the gain. What's more, he walks his talk. Just amazing. I haven't cried in years. But, today, I wept.

I was sad to learn that Charlie Munger died today at age 99. What a life. He would likely roll his eyes and argue that none of us should be too surprised, based on the actuarial tables, but we’ve lost one of the 20th century’s greatest investors and businessmen. Chris and I were lucky enough to get to know Charlie over the past few years. There’s a saying, “Don’t meet your heroes; they will only let you down.” In this instance, the quote does not apply. Charlie was exactly how he appeared, the same person whether he was being interviewed on CNBC, hosting dinner at his home, or negotiating a deal. We could all learn a thing or two from him about how to play the (very) long game. Here are four things he said to us that stuck: “I don’t need the last dollar” We heard Charlie say this many times while discussing potential deals. Either it was a good deal, or it wasn’t. He didn’t need to chisel out a few more percent and risk bad feelings. “Hold your nose and carry on” Charlie wasn’t one to dwell on the past, unless there was an important lesson to learn for the future. He expected things to occasionally go wrong and having learned from the error, he moved on. “It’s foolish to try to change someone’s mind” When we asked him for advice about a difficult person we were working with and how we could convince them to change course, Charlie told us not to waste our energy trying to change their mind. “They think what they think,” he told us—it was locked in. We were better off simply aligning ourselves with people who already think the way we do. “It’s a mistake to be deeply ideological about almost anything - it’s better to have doubt” On just about every topic—even investing—Charlie’s frequent refrain was “it’s hard...” The intellectual equivalent of folding your cards in a game of poker when you aren’t sure about your hand. Charlie didn’t need to have a firm opinion about everything. (Ok, maybe cryptocurrency.) If you’re curious to learn more about Charlie, I highly recommend his book, Poor Charlie’s Almanac, as well as The Tao of Charlie Munger by David Clark. It’s a wonderful collection of some of his best quotes, and the audiobook is great. We’ll miss you, Charlie.
