What's the best book you've ever received as a gift?
Mine came as a Christmas gift in 2011 from my grandma.
Stephen King's "11/22/63" blew me away and kickstarted a Stephen King obsession.

For most students, not reading isn't a mechanical problem that standards, tests, or penalties can fix.
Not reading is a problem of motivation.
And motivation dies when student choice is taken away.

@dpolehn The Lorax is one Seuss book we don’t have. We’ve watched the movie but I don’t think I’ve ever sat down and read it.

@ReadingFam When we were little my parents got a bunch of random kids books published by Parents Magazine. My personal favorite was “The Old Man and the Afternoon Cat.” Now, I read those random books to my niece and nephew.

There's 2 main things ChatGPT lacks:
•human experience
•intuition developed from that human experience
If I'm a teacher, I'm explicitly crafting assignments that call on students to bring those two elements to the table.

On the way home, I sometimes ask him what he thinks other kids in his class are doing right now.

Failure should be something we encourage when kids are young, not punish. They have to try many different things that don’t work before they can find the things that do. Our society needs failure to fuel discovery and progress.

When you stop to talk about a word or idea they don't know, they're learning.
And when they interrupt to point at or talk about a car or dog on the page, you learn about their interests.
