“BUT WHY DO THEY SAY ‘BEAR DOWN’ IF THEY’RE THE WILDCATS?” Class is in session. Our topic? John Byrd “Button” Salmon. ↓

Button wasn’t just the quarterback. He was the student body president. Played baseball, too. He embodied what it meant to be a Wildcat. But what he’s best known for is the words he said on his deathbed.

October 1926 – ahead of a football season that had national championship potential – Button was in a car accident. His coach, J.F. “Pop” McKale (yeah – *that* McKale), visited him in the hospital.

Button had one message: “Tell them… tell the team to bear down.” A few days later, he passed away at 22 years old.

McKale repeated Salmon’s message at a campus-wide assembly the next day. And from there, “Bear Down” took on a life of its own. The student body transformed Button’s words into something bigger. A mindset. A standard.

For a century, “Bear Down” has carried Wildcats in defining moments. It’s the phrase we say when victory is earned and the one we lean on when the path ahead is uncertain. In triumph, it is pride. In challenge, it is resolve.

Bear Down is what you say to a fellow Wildcat when you spot them wearing the Block A at the airport (in Indianapolis, maybe?). It’s what you tell a friend when they’re nervous before a big exam.

It’s what we shouted when OSIRIS-REx returned the first asteroid samples to Earth. It’s what we reply when someone says it can’t be done. Bear Down is like instant camaraderie – a secret handshake.

So yeah. That’s why we say it. Bear Down.
