Colour, Symbolism, Man of Steel Zack Snyder uses colour more intelligently, as a story telling tool, than just simply sell it to a manufactured fanbase of babies clapping when the plane lands. The film sees three different tones in three segments, each with a different dominant colour scheme. The Krypton segment is largely red, denoting the end of Krypton. The same scheme can be briefly seen later when Zod and Kal-El are having a conversation about Krypton being built on Earth’s doom. The second is the cold beginning of Kal-El’s life as Clark. Hardly any red or yellow hues are seen throughout, until the middle of the first flight sequence. This denotes a cold reality. A feeling of alienation, homelessness, and a painful past buried far under an avalanche of alienating experiences. To him, it’s the conclusion of his wander in a barren, frozen world. The third segment begins from the middle of the first flight sequence. From there on, warmth starts to trickle in. When Jor-El says, “You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive for. In time, they will join you in the sun,” that is when Kal-El truly and Clark truly become one, and he accepts the warmth of Earth, or at least its nature as a start. From then on, even geographically, he heads inward to warmer regions. Air, water, dust, animals… everything warm about Earth touches him. And then he goes up, and we see him and Earth, like a man looking at his home.
