ENGLISHMAN was back on the work tab this morning for the first time since his dominant victory in the G1 Woody Stephens Stakes on June 6, when he won by 5 3/4 lengths and tied the 7F track record of 1:20.40 set in 1978! 🏇 The 3yo Maxfield colt worked 4 furlongs in 47.80 this morning at @keeneland for trainer @reredevaux. @ginpow3v @hatshetsut28 I too prefer a bigger framed horse. I’m also a maniac about keeping as much weight as we can. I have studied nutrition, researched supplements, etc. It’s such a balance as well as keeping the horses muscle on them

@reredevaux @hatshetsut28 I like my horses with more groceries on them regardless of frame. At least you did the right thing & sent to another vocation I've seen way too many keep going with them & that's outright abuse IMO.

During this journey I have undoubtedly been asked “do these horses really want to run?” And my answer is “it’s apparent when they do not and it’s our responsibility to recognize that.” That’s the case with Sweetalkingbourbon, after 3 races where he just did not pick up his feet he is going to rehomed for a second career.

@jbauer2581 @fidgetsfive @UArkansas Traceability has been the forefront of many conversations. That has been found to be one of the biggest issue. One of biggest incentives of using an accredited aftercare program is they keep up on the horses when they leave their programs

@fidgetsfive @reredevaux Curious to find out if there was any response from the @uarkansas since they were the ones that moved him out of the stud program. It's not always the fault of the racing connections for the circumstances after the horse is retired.

My dear friend, I understand and respect your decision, but an old horseman might see it a little differently. If Sweetalkingbourbon is sound, I would not give up on him after only three races. I might geld him, change something in his training, or drop him to a level where he can become competitive. Seabiscuit taught us that horses sometimes need patience, understanding, and the right circumstances before revealing what is inside them. I believe Thoroughbreds love to run—but not every horse is Seattle Slew. Sometimes good horsemanship means finding the place where an ordinary horse can feel extraordinary.

@ginpow3v @hatshetsut28 Gina, you are seeing a quick photo of the horse. He is a light framed horse that just ran. He is going to lighten up after a race. His races have generally been spaced out because of that.

@hatshetsut28 @reredevaux I've trained lots of racehorses over the years and I would NEVER have a horse in this condition in my barn especially when its entire career has been in my care. It's not like it was claimed this way or transferred to me in this condition. I just find this unacceptable.
