You are right - all life should be respected. However, one correction: the Chinese people spoke up first, and spoke up so massively even the technological censor couldn’t shut them up completely - this is how this story reached the rest of the world. And they are still not silent and looking for every way to implement the animal protection law, and hence accountability. This law has been quite recently rejected for the 8th time. Let’s hope that nr. 9 is indeed as lucky as the Chinese culture envisions it. The pressure from outside is the best that can happen to help the goodhearted Chinese people to change things for the best. Right now they are the only ones who truly can change anything, since Beijing responds to any outside criticism as “interference with their domestic affairs”. What’s fortunate is that this tragedy made them lose face… this is something very important to realise. This is something that can speed up the process. But even if the seemingly impossible will happen, and the law will be pushed through immediately, it will still take years to change the mentality of a small portion of Chinese people who see cats and dogs as valuable as a mug, and if you break it - no biggie. So yes, it’s important to keep going! But doing so with cognitive empathy - with understanding that in order to reason with someone you need respect and understanding, and you cannot go around naively projecting your own levels of being onto others thinking it’s the norm. Even I am guilty as charged. I grew up a little more through this tragedy in this regard.

I am preparing a piece about the possibilities. It’s good to stay realistic - but also continue to see possible timelines. You are not wrong by questioning whether it is possible at all. I am not exaggerating when I say that this is the worst heartbreak of my entire life. Then there’s my mind - my mind simply cannot cope with how this sadism can even exist in our modern world.
