It is not surprising to see that the Pope endorses a lot of superstitious mind/body dualism about artificial intelligence but it’s still wrong, even as he is also raising a lot of good points about some of the risks at play.

The problem is you're not the lesser evil and it's not even close. It takes a constant reinforcing of a weird negative parasocial relationship with the president to evrn make that idea remotely believable, and he still got elected twice. That fig leaf expires in three years.

In a time of unrest, all sides get worse. That's an unpleasant reality we have to acknowledge. It's always a question of the lesser of two evils. I'm not going to sugarcoat that unpleasant phenomenon.

I don't care what they do with DST. I'm up anyways. Just pick a permanent setting and stick with it so this can be the last year of listening to people who wake up after 8am cry.

@RealJohnDios @mattyglesias Soul-body dualism is the metaphysical basis of the Faith. Only a barbarian would deny that. "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own SOUL?" Matthew 16:26 and Mark 8:36

@nealjclark1 I can't think of a better bulwark than a small town with easily influenced institutions and home ownership as far as things go these days but there's no sure bets. It's a roll of the dice either way.

It really is a no win. You can go on the lamb because you fear the specter of the State but the State won’t leave you alone. In fact you will be subjected to many different and idiosyncratic state enforcers across various jurisdictions without the benefit of counter institutions

The "settled" householder can only derive his security from political stability, genuine democracy, or through violence (either of a defensive or of an insurgent type). Absent any of these he is only a sitting duck for tyrants. His metric tons of "stuff" cannot be easily moved when an ill fate should threaten his household, and so he is stuck. His investment is not movable; he must do what the local authorities demand of him, and be subjected to any degradation of his local area that those authorities may cause or tolerate -- simply by virtue of his fixity in place. He must either make an appeal to a stable, benevolent, and noble political authority, or he must exercise his rights as a citizen of a functioning democracy -- or he must either violently revolt, or defend himself. In our times, none of these are options. We have no great Monarch, nor a functional aristocracy. Our democracy is in shambles. Yet the state is incredibly effective at preventing uprisings and even of depriving the householder of his right to self defense. In these conditions, owning a "forever home" is not really possible -- because no matter where you are, it is only a matter of time before cynical, corrupt political forces (or ghastly moral and cultural forces) come to threaten your way of life. In such times as these, there are only a few theoretically possible options: 1. Re-establishment of a stable and virtuous political authority. Good luck with that. 2. Fixing the almost limitless number of flaws and structural failings of our democratic system. Again -- good luck. 3. Attempting to foment some kind of an uprising in case of tyranny. An excellent pathway to prison time. 4. Extreme mobility. The abandonment of the "forever home" idea. This may not be ideal, but it is certainly a possibility, and will remain so no matter how much worse things may get. What is left but option #4? Even in the absolute best and most "free" political jurisdictions in the USA, there seem to be structural problems embedded in the politics of domestic migration that will threaten those places on a long enough time scale. To expect one of these places to remain favorable for a lifetime is an immense gamble. This may be how the American Khanate is born.

Pope Leo just condemned the idea that "work dignifies man". We. Are. So. Back!

@Empty_America Grant Platner outrage is pretty prevalent IRL among boomer types. I think the outrage machine is just broken because of how Trump has been covered (and managed to neutralize the outrage) for the last decade. In recent history they'd have pulled his candidacy very early on.

@Siciliboi A lot of the older guys will wear a suit here but it does not have this gay vibe of high fashion and keeping up with the Joneses. Probably the same suit they've had for 30 years.
