We adopted Barnaby to die. I know that sounds harsh—but it’s the truth. He was 15 years old. A senior Pit Bull with cloudy eyes and a slow, careful walk. The shelter paperwork said “Hospice Foster.” His family had surrendered him because he “slept too much” and struggled to get around. So we prepared ourselves for goodbye. Orthopedic beds in every room. Ramps instead of stairs. Quiet nights. Soft mornings. We thought we were giving him a peaceful place to spend his final weeks. But Barnaby had other plans. Week one: He slept. The deep, healing sleep that only comes when you finally feel safe. Week two: He realized this wasn’t temporary. He wasn’t going back. This… was home. Week three: He found the stuffed toy. Not new. Not fancy. Just a worn, soft little toy. And he carried it everywhere. That’s when the “dying” Pit Bull disappeared. The dog who “could barely walk” began trotting proudly through the house—stuffed toy clenched in his mouth like a trophy. The dog who “slept too much” started waking us up early, toy in hand, ready for the day. At night, he sat just like this—holding it close, as if afraid it might vanish. That’s when we understood. Barnaby wasn’t dying. He wasn’t weak because of his age. He was exhausted from loneliness. From cold floors. From being left behind. Now he’s 15 years old. He steals pizza off the counter. He outruns me to the backyard. And he still carries that same stuffed toy—proof that joy found him again. We failed at hospice fostering. But we succeeded at something better. We gave a senior Pit Bull a reason to stay. And he showed us that sometimes love doesn’t just extend a life… Sometimes, it brings it back. 🐾❤️ Credit: Tayler

**An Ode to the Angel of the Soi** In the autumn of my years, at sixty-six and more, I carry still the fire that youth once bore. The world has paid its wages, the house is warm and still, Yet one unfinished errand climbs the summit of my will. Across the sea it calls me, through the humid Bangkok night, Where stray dogs limp on broken paws beneath the neon light. There walks a man with scarred arms and a heart too vast to mend, Who feeds the lost, the lame, the cursed, until their suffering ends. Niall Harbison—his name is whispered by the temple dogs at dawn, A saint who wears the devil’s tattoos, yet greets the day with song. He knows the taste of darkness, he has slept inside its jaws, And woke to give his breakfast to creatures with no cause. I do not go to judge him, nor to lighten what he bears, I go because my spirit has rehearsed this dream for years: To find him on some dusty soi, amid the bowls and chains, To take his battered fighter’s hand and hold it in my hands. No speeches, no grand telling, no need to name the why— Just one old man, one moment, beneath a burning sky. A handshake strong and silent, a hug that says “I see, The war you fought in darkness, and the mercy you set free.” Then I would turn and leave him with the creatures he has saved, My bucket list grown lighter, my heart no longer caved. For in that brief collision of two strangers’ mortal spans, I’d touch the wing of an angel who still walks the earth as man. So let the plane wheels leave the ground, let passports stamp their due, I travel not for temples, nor for oceans vast and blue. I travel for a handshake, for a hug I’ll never speak of again— To tell a battered saviour that his light has reached one man. And when my own road ends one day, and the quiet finally falls, I’ll smile among the dogs of heaven, who’ll know me by his call. For I will carry in my chest, until the final breath is gone, The warmth of Niall Harbison— The angel of the soi, carrying on. 👍❤️ I wish for, or want for nothing in return, just a shake of the hand, and a hug.. I will walk away a very happy man. ❤️

I’ve seen a lot of crazy things rescuing dogs here in Thailand. Probably none more so than today. Locals hadn’t been able to touch this boy in “years”. He held so many surprises… (1/8) 🧵

She came in to @wearehappydoggo and we put her up for adoption. Unsurprisingly she got over 100 applications. After 4 months of prep and paper work she was able to travel today (4/8)

Snickers is the street dog who brought me a present every morning as I arrived to feed her. Today we were able to give her the gift of a lifetime. We just waved her off to her forever home in America… (1/8) 🧵

There are no bad dogs in shelters—only dogs waiting for a chance. This video was taken at playtime in Baldwin Park CA and just look how cute they all are! I FOUND A DOG WAITING BY A DOOR THAT WOULD NEVER OPEN AGAIN It was a bright, freezing afternoon when I passed by an old house at the end of my street. The windows were dark, the driveway empty—whoever had lived there was long gone. But on the front step, curled up in a tight ball, was a dog. His fur was dirty, his ribs showed through his thin frame, but what broke me the most was the way he kept staring at the road, as if expecting his owner to return at any moment. I knelt down and spoke softly. He lifted his head, tired and confused, but didn't move. He had been waiting there for who knows how long. I asked around, but the neighbors told me the family had moved away weeks ago. They left, but their dog never did. I couldn't leave him there. I took him home, gave him food, warmth, and love. I named him Benny. At first, he kept staring at my door, just like he had at that empty street, waiting. But over time, he realized this door would always open for him. Now, Benny is safe, loved, and never has to wait for someone who isn't coming back. Because this time, he's finally home.

How much time is too much time? Days? Weeks? Months? Years? Smokey has been at the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Philadelphia headquarters for 1,554 days. Is that too much time?

Deux légendes. Une rivalité.
Roger Federer@rogerfederer

Vamos, @RafaelNadal!   As you get ready to graduate from tennis, I’ve got a few things to share before I maybe get emotional.   Let’s start with the obvious: you beat me—a lot. More than I managed to beat you. You challenged me in ways no one else could. On clay, it felt like I was stepping into your backyard, and you made me work harder than I ever thought I could just to hold my ground. You made me reimagine my game—even going so far as to change the size of my racquet head, hoping for any edge.   I’m not a very superstitious person, but you took it to the next level. Your whole process. All those rituals. Assembling your water bottles like toy soldiers in formation, fixing your hair, adjusting your underwear... All of it with the highest intensity. Secretly, I kind of loved the whole thing. Because it was so unique—it was so you.   And you know what, Rafa, you made me enjoy the game even more.    OK, maybe not at first. After the 2004 Australian Open, I achieved the #1 ranking for the first time. I thought I was on top of the world. And I was—until two months later, when you walked on the court in Miami in your red sleeveless shirt, showing off those biceps, and you beat me convincingly. All that buzz I’d been hearing about you—about this amazing young player from Mallorca, a generational talent, probably going to win a major someday—it wasn’t just hype.   We were both at the start of our journey and it’s one we ended up taking together. Twenty years later, Rafa, I have to say: What an incredible run you’ve had. Including 14 French Opens—historic! You made Spain proud... you made the whole tennis world proud.   I keep thinking about the memories we’ve shared. Promoting the sport together. Playing that match on half-grass, half-clay. Breaking the all-time attendance record by playing in front of more than 50,000 fans in Cape Town, South Africa. Always cracking each other up. Wearing each other out on the court and then, sometimes, almost literally having to hold each other up during trophy ceremonies.   I’m still grateful you invited me to Mallorca to help launch the Rafa Nadal Academy in 2016. Actually, I kind of invited myself. I knew you were too polite to insist on me being there, but I didn’t want to miss it. You have always been a role model for kids around the world, and Mirka and I are so glad that our children have all trained at your academies. They had a blast and learned so much—like thousands of other young players. Although I always worried my kids would come home playing tennis as lefties.   And then there was London—the Laver Cup in 2022. My final match. It meant everything to me that you were there by my side—not as my rival but as my doubles partner. Sharing the court with you that night, and sharing those tears, will forever be one of the most special moments of my career.   Rafa, I know you’re focused on the last stretch of your epic career. We will talk when it’s done. For now, I just want to congratulate your family and team, who all played a massive role in your success. And I want you to know that your old friend is always cheering for you, and will be cheering just as loud for everything you do next.   Rafa that!   Best always, your fan,
 Roger
