There was once a guy in my unit who I thought was one of the dudes you could rely on. A strong sense of justice and fairness, with a need to prove himself to those around him. Growing up in his brother's shadow, he needed to push himself to stand out from the pack. He fought along side me countless times and I trusted him... He ended up making a deal with some corrupt leadership to accept an award for something he didn't do. The exact discussion they had when it was offered to him is unknown to me. Not only did he accept a medal for something he didn't do, it was something someone else did. That person saved his life that day, and was passed-over by Battalion leadership because he was a troublemaker back in garrison life. When he got shit from literally everyone in Battalion for this bullshit he got defensive, and eventually went AWOL before leadership could solve the problem. He eventually got caught, cried to the media that he was a war hero and that the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were bullshit and made up some stuff about secret government plans. Remember, this dude is a Corporal at the time. It was QAnon level shit back way before QAnon was a thing. So you know what?... No, I don't know what anyone is actually willing to do or say when the cameras are on them and they're feeling the pressure of the Feds. I don't know how to gauge what someone will do based on prior behavior, even if I believe they're honorable. I can make an educated guess, but I don't really know. People change, times change, information becomes hard to navigate.
