@UntoldWarFacts A footnote: They added dive brakes to the original Mustang with the Allison engine and rechristened it as the A-36 Apache dive bomber.

🧵 5/5 The Americans put the Merlin into licensed production at the Packard automobile factory in Detroit. The new Packard built Merlin engine was designated the V-1650. It was installed in a new American built version of the Mustang called the P-51B. In late 1943 the first squadrons of Merlin powered P-51 Mustangs arrived in England. The 354th Fighter Group flew the first long range bomber escort mission in December 1943. By March 1944 the P-51 was escorting American B-17 and B-24 bombers all the way to Berlin and back. Before the Mustang the 8th Air Force had been losing bomber crews at devastating rates over Germany. With the Mustang flying escort the loss rate began to fall. The German Luftwaffe could no longer rise to attack the bombers without being intercepted. By the summer of 1944 the Mustang had broken the back of the German fighter force over Europe. 15,000 P-51 Mustangs were built before production ended. The aircraft escorted B-29 Superfortresses to the home islands of Japan. It served in the Korean War. It was flown by the air forces of more than 20 countries. The new state of Israel bought P-51s in 1948 and flew them in their war of independence. Edgar Schmued lived to see his fighter become a legend. He spent the rest of his career at North American Aviation. He died in 1985 at the age of 85. A self-taught German immigrant designed it from sketches he had been making for years. An American factory built the prototype in 117 days. A Royal Air Force test pilot saved it from mediocrity by suggesting a British engine. The American Army Air Force put the British engine into mass production back in Detroit. One of the most successful Allied fighters of the Second World War was built in 117 days because a small American company refused to build copies of someone else's design. I post a story like this every single day. Most people never see them. Follow so you don't miss the next one.

In 1940 Britain desperately needed a new fighter aircraft to fight the Germans. An American company nobody had heard of promised they could design and build an entirely new fighter in 120 days. They delivered it in 117. The aircraft they built became one of the most important fighters of the entire Second World War. This is the story of the P-51 Mustang..🧵1/5

🧵 5/5 The Devil Dogs fought on. They served at Iwo Jima. They served at Peleliu. They served at Okinawa. They served on every Pacific island the Marines took back from the Japanese in the final two years of the war. Caesar the German Shepherd who had saved Rufus Mayo's life on Bougainville was killed in action on northern Okinawa on April 17 1945. His handler Bob Forsyth said of him afterward: "Andy and Caesar were good Marines." The men who handled the Devil Dogs never forgot them. After the war Captain William Putney, the Marine veterinarian who had cared for Kurt on Guam, spent the rest of his life pushing for proper recognition of the war dogs. In 2001 he published a memoir called Always Faithful, the first detailed account of the Marine War Dog Platoons in the Pacific. In June 1994 a bronze statue of Kurt the Doberman was unveiled at the Pentagon. It was sculpted by an artist named Susan Bahary. The statue was then shipped to Guam and installed at a new cemetery on the Naval Base. The remains of the 24 Devil Dogs who had been killed liberating Guam were moved to the new ground beneath the statue. The cemetery was dedicated on July 21 1994, exactly 50 years after the invasion. The bronze Kurt stands watch over his fallen brothers to this day. The inscription on the base honors the 25 Marine war dogs who gave their lives liberating Guam in 1944. It records that they served as sentries, messengers, and scouts. That they explored caves, detected mines and booby traps. It ends with two words. Semper Fidelis. Reminder that Trump cut your health care, food assistance, and disaster preparedness programs because they cost Americans "too much." So where does the $1 billion White House ballroom fall? cnbc.com/amp/2026/05/18…

In Trump’s White House there is unlimited taxpayer money for a $1 billion ballroom, an unending war of choice, and now a slush fund for his crooked allies. But never enough to deliver for working families.

@kitchenDIY_ I am baffled by American cooking - just pour packets and packets of ingredients and fry it. Huge amounts of ingredients and the end result looks like prison food. Try a something way more sophisticated. Any food requiring a whole packet of anything is not classy.

@BskiMike22802 Well, of course it’s a false flag because Trump is a warmonger who does whatever Bibi and Putin tell him to do except when he always chickens out (TACO) and because of all that he is obviously mentally unfit for the job and he only cares about enriching his billionaire buddies…

Reply to @RepJeffries — Gas Prices Post Oh, the AUDACITY. Yes, @RepJeffries, let us absolutely stop preventing Iran from turning my children into a shadow on a concrete wall from a nuclear warhead — so families can save $10 a week on gas. Quick question, and I want you to think REALLY hard before answering: would anyone in America care about gas prices if they were incinerated by an Iranian nuclear device? Just checking if your logic has a flaw somewhere. Take your time. I will wait. But what do I know — I am only a science teacher and medically retired Army combat medic who actually thinks national security and fuel prices are not the same category of problem. @GuntherEagleman @catturd2 @JoJoFromJerz #MAGA #Veterans #Trump

Disney has filed a petition with the FCC asking the agency to declare that The View is exempt from the statutory equal opportunities requirements that would otherwise apply to broadcast shows. Disney argues that The View qualifies as “bona fide news” under the law, comparing itself to Meet The Press or Face The Nation. Therefore, Disney argues, it can have one partisan candidate for office on The View while denying equal opportunities to all others. The FCC is now seeking public comment on Disney’s request to be labeled as “bona fide news.” Is The View a “bona fide news interview program”? Under FCC case law, tv shows do not qualify as “bona fide news” if their decisions are based on partisan purposes, such as an intention to advance or harm an individual’s candidacy. As the Public Notice observes, Congress originally passed the equal opportunities law to prevent media gatekeepers from deciding the outcome of elections. The law, even when it applies, does not prohibit anyone from having any candidate appear on any show. Rather, Congress intended it to empower voters with more information and encourage more speech. The FCC welcomes your views: docs.fcc.gov/public/attachm…

He's not sharing his military decisions with Congress, nor his own Pentagon. This is a rogue, incompetent Commander in Chief with no plans or strategies. Just chaos. And none of it makes America safer.
