@Niall_Boylan @GBNEWS I agree the big shows are certainly BS biased and I can't listen to some of the tripe but the licence fee is validated by the fantastic @RTElyricfm and @TG4TV plus some exceptional late night music DJ's on @RTEOne They alone are worth more than what I'm paying Netflix

I don’t watch RTE news anymore as it doesn’t serve me and is clearly left wing bias and pro government. I don’t watch live sport on RTE as it doesn’t interest me. I actually watch no live TV with the exception of @GBNEWS , so why should I fund RTE and pay a licence fee. I already pay Sky and Netflix. It’s time to abolish the licence fee.

It only took: Eight years of notebooks of tracking stats. Six years after presenting my findings for the first time. @fairplaywomen @sharrond62 Five years after writing the first peer-reviewed paper that established an evidence base for policy making. @TLexercise @Scienceofsport An onslaught of abuse. Multiple institutional complaints, and attempts to trash my credibility. Arguments to force retractions. A report to the U.K. police. A trans-identifying male tweeting about me 400 times a month, while making vulgar remarks about his breasts. No platforming and refusals to even be in the same room as me. IOC-backed scientists calling me TERF in secret groups. IOC-backed scientists making published arguments to ignore my papers. IOC “scientists” snarling at me in a public forum. An IOC sociologist inventing a whole new term to describe my approach, as if “biofeminism” was a pejorative 😂 An IOC-backed journal rejecting an extensive and well-backed critique of the IOC policy that has now been thrown out (because transphobe, testosterone doesn’t map to performance anyway, and other such bullshit). So many - far too many - private apologies from those too concerned to be publicly associated with me. The IOC didn’t need this scientific review. The work was already done, by those of us who have worked diligently for years to synthesise and analyse evidence, to consider arguments and examine counter arguments, all in the public domain. And all of whom have suffered the same backlash. @runthinkwrite @cathydevine56 Male development leads to male sporting advantage, and it’s baked in. It’s that simple.

@KevinH_PhD Very sad to hear. Thank you for all your work 💪 I've read some of it, and it has without question increased my knowledge, contributed to my academic studies and my approach to working with clients in the health and fitness space. Best of luck with the next phase 🙌

After 21 years at my dream job, I’m very sad to announce my early retirement from the National Institutes of Health. My life’s work has been to scientifically study how our food environment affects what we eat, and how what we eat affects our physiology. Lately, I’ve focused on unravelling the reasons why diets high in ultra-processed food are linked to epidemic proportions of chronic diseases such as diabetes and obesity. Our research leads the world on this topic. Given recent bipartisan goals to prevent diet-related chronic diseases, and new agency leadership professing to prioritize scientific investigation of ultra-processed foods, I had hoped to expand our research program with ambitious plans to more rapidly and efficiently determine how our food is likely making Americans chronically sick. Unfortunately, recent events have made me question whether NIH continues to be a place where I can freely conduct unbiased science. Specifically, I experienced censorship in the reporting of our research because of agency concerns that it did not appear to fully support preconceived narratives of my agency’s leadership about ultra-processed food addiction. I was hoping this was an aberration. So, weeks ago I wrote to my agency’s leadership expressing my concerns and requested time to discuss these issues, but I never received a response. Without any reassurance there wouldn’t be continued censorship or meddling in our research, I felt compelled to accept early retirement to preserve health insurance for my family. (Resigning later in protest of any future meddling or censorship would result in losing that benefit.) Due to very tight deadlines to make this decision, I don’t yet have plans for my future career. The NIH has been a wonderful place because it allows scientists to take risks, form unique collaborations, and do studies difficult to conduct elsewhere. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished and I’m fortunate to have had such wonderful colleagues and scientific collaborators. I hope to someday return to government service and lead a research program that will continue to provide gold-standard science to make Americans healthy.

@brady_h Some research I read a couple of years ago investigated the specific composition of fats and their potential role in adipose gain 8% Linoleic acid had greater weight gain than 1% Linoleic acid (isocaloric) in mice pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC38…

Hot take 🚨 If we replace seed oils with tallow and HFCS with cane sugar, we'll get fatter, not healthier. Why? For one, they taste better (we'll eat more). Second, there's a health halo attached to these ingredients that will give people a license to eat more of them.

Diet, like pharmacology or a surgical knife are tools, it's the mode of deployment that makes them successful Pharma is effective and v profitable, surgery a distant 2nd and diet works but out in the wilderness financially Innovation may change that, all we can do is try 🤞
Dr. Spencer Nadolsky@DrNadolsky

I've had dozens of patients tell me they had lost 50-100 pounds 4-5 TIMES in the past 10-15 years using keto and/or fasting. They lose and regain the same 50-100 pounds. Low carb and fasting diets will never solve the obesity epidemic. Nor will any diet for that matter.

@mackinprof The antimyostatin drugs are being developed to combat this. Hopefully getting resistance exercise will still be the first line of defence as there is a lot more to muscle function then just inhibiting a single growth factor medscape.com/viewarticle/lo…

@Shane_Mangan @JohnFogartyIrl Open in Edge and use immersive reader to bypass the ad Not a lot more context really, I read it as the cost being the bugbear but that's part of the progression with any sport as athletes strive to be champions

@JohnFogartyIrl I can't read because of the paywall John but I hope really there's more context in the article. The general premise of all contact sports is it's more beneficial for the team in possession to avoid contact and for the team out of possession to engage in contact.

Great study! 1) best evidence yet that meal distribution doesn't matter that much 2) the upper limit of what our muscle can use - higher than we thought! Unknown 1) what this means long-term 2) whether this translates into gainz 3) the balance of protein in muscle - not whole body Outstanding work!!

@catherineeats I put organic butter on @SuperValuIRL shelves in 2017 with their fantastic Food Academy It's very niche and beset by manufacturing headaches I made the mistake of focusing too much on butter when it's too small a fraction of the milk Would be great to see someone try again
