📰 Important news for #DurhamRegion homeowners. Many homeowners are not paying their property taxes. In fact, this number has jumped by 83% from 2020-2024 alone 😱 And yes, the bank can repossess your home if you owe taxes. Across Durham's five largest municipalities, here are the average property tax arrears: • Declined 23% between 2010 and 2014. ($12.8 million to $9.8 million) • Increased 27% between 2015 and 2019. ($9.8 million to 12 million) • Jumped 83% between 2020 and 2024. ($15.1 million to $27.6 million) And the unpublished 2025 tax arrears look even worse. This is a big concern for many of my clients as they decide where to live. "Is this area safe" comes up a lot. I would only add that people experience crime by postal code area mostly, not as an entire city. On any given week I will be in various areas within 20 mins of each other and the crime levels vary widely.

Homicides up. Gun crime down. I hope to be in studio today discussing this. Here’s my take. Homicide is the most serious crime, and every victim matters. But homicide numbers alone don’t determine how safe the average person is in their day to day life. Many homicides involve people known to one another, including gang conflicts, domestic violence, family violence, or acquaintances. They are horrific, but they don’t necessarily reflect the everyday risk to the average resident. What often shapes public confidence are the incidents Torontonians are seeing for themselves, hearing/reading about. Random stranger assaults, robberies, encampments, carjackings, swarming attacks, open drug use, mental health crises in public spaces, and disorder on transit. These incidents may not end in homicide, but they have a profound impact on how safe people feel. Perception matters. If people are avoiding parks, public events, changing their routines, or choosing not to use public transit because they don’t feel safe, that’s a legitimate public safety issue. Both things can be true. Toronto remains one of the safer large cities in North America by many measures, while many residents are also justified in feeling less safe because of rising disorder and unpredictable crime. The public deserves honesty, not fear-mongering and not false reassurance. We can acknowledge Toronto’s strengths while recognizing the very real concerns that residents are experiencing every day. IMO.
